The Basler Kantonalbank will be open but they close earlier (at 3.30). Don't know if that's the same in all "affected" cantons

Do we Zuriquois have to remember the shops close early on Monday because the next day is a holiday?

To be honest nothing makes me happier than seeing the riot police out bashing a few heads in on Mayday. I've got zero respect for these scumbags who just feel they have a right to grafitti and damage a beautiful city and give absolutely nothing positive back to it.
I'm all for freedom of speech but these losers just instill fear!

Re: May Day Holiday in Zurich

Just to be clear, there is a big difference between the workers and family festival that happens at the Kaserne and the members of the "black block". The legitimate union organisers go to great lengths to distance themselves politically and physically from the block block.

The black block is basically a radical lefty anarchist rent-a-rabble who descend on Zurich with the pure intention of having a confrontation with the police and smashing some windows and Mercs. When I say descend, most of them are non-Zurichers and non-Swiss here for their idea of fun day out, hoodies and balaclavas at the ready.

Great. Can you guarantee the Police will ONLY bash the heads in of those "losers" and not anyone else? And when is head bashing appropriate? I hope you're not stuck in the middle when it kicks off. Are you for real or just Kim Jong Il?

Well Uncle Max what do you think should happen when you have people thrashing shop fronts, historical buildings and peoples private property. These people have no fear of the authorities and only exist within their own mob culture and right wing extremism. They take days like this and turn them into their own release of idiocy and anger.
Sure maybe me talking about head bashing was an extreme statement and I would never like to see an innocent person hurt but as for these right wing guys I could only smile.

Re: May Day Holiday in Zurich

I just got back from the annual crusty triathlon (Steeple Chase, Shot Put and 100 metre's) and I have to say that I think that the police were generally well behaved and only seemed to go for the real trouble makers.
But, given that the trouble makers were pretty obvious I would have thought that they would have made a better attempt to isolate them well before it got out of hand.
I did see one Merc on fire and quite a few broken windows (KPMG). It seemed as though the bulk of the police were waiting some distance away until the trouble started and then reacted very heavily. Maybe a more visible police presence from the start could have prevented some of the damage, but I'm no expert. I hope that we don't see scenes like this at the football next year.

nope, may-day is a regional holiday in Switzerland. The following cantons don't get a day (or several days) off:

Aargau
Appenzell (both)
Bern
Geneva
Glarus
Graubünden
Luzern
Neuchâtel
Nidwalden
Obwalden
Schwiiz
St. Gallen
Uri
Vaud
Wallis
Zug

that's usually because they have other public holidays that the rest of the Cantons don't have. In Aargau, "Berchtoldstag" is a holiday, for example.

Many other European countries don't consider may-day a holdiay. The UK, for example, but also Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands.

regards,

dakis
Here in Flums (St Gallen) nearly all shops and businesses were open. The girl at Landi did say however they could have Nov 1st off instead if they want. Is it just coincidence that's 6 months away or what?

Re: May Day Holiday in Zurich

A tip, do avoid tear-gas, it's not nice. And if you get caught by a water canon, you might be lucky to have been sprayed with water spiked with tear gas. Coppers once given a baton, will run after anybody and the only option is to run as well.

Been there, done it and I'm not a wild leftie anarchist....

It's purely coincidental. Nov 1 is "Allerheiligen" (All Saints' Day) which is a holiday in many traditionally catholic cantons (such as St. Gallen).
