Alright. This is really a difference. There is a small "restaurant" known as Heli-Grill, at the airport on the Rümlang side. Have just seen that they have erected a kind of mini-Chalet, which looks like a small Stübli, and which apparently will be their fumoir. It is a few meters beside the main thing, but not a gymnastical challenge for the smokers.

Then they will all close down, because all the super nonsmokers will still stay at home because by then they will have decided that drinking is the next thing they want to ban!

In a nutshell, what are currently are the main tenets of the smoking ban coming in may, for a person living in zurich?

I heard it is federal, so nationwide, rather than just cantonal choice.

Is it true that smaller restaurants and bars under 100sq m can still remain a smoking bar?

Bigger than this means a complete ban, or a smoking room?

All close down? Surely not.
The thing that smokers don't get, well actually they do get it but chose to be selfish and ignore it, is that smoking has an impact on other people around them.
Whereas the act of drinking does not, unless of course you're hammered and spill your pint. Unlikely if you're on the shandy though.

The only places that may suffer for a while are the ones out in the sticks, and they generally have enough space to build a fumoir anyway.

All this could have been avoided if only smokers had played the game and been a bit more considerate.

I am non smoker and don't go out because I can't breathe in thoses places. So in a sense, smoking ban is not exactly something I want to fight against.

BUT.

Smoking ban inside means more chatting smokers outside. I hope your street has no bars if you want to sleep in Frieden/paix/pace/pasch.

And the reason you can't find any is? The people that own them don't want to ban smoking!!

There is the Federal Ban, which sets minimum standards, and allows small places of less than 100 m2 to be done as "smokers places". But if a Cantonal Ban is in place which goes further, than the Cantonal Ban applies. And this means that in the Canton of Zurich, no such places will be allowed.

As far as Alaska goes, it looks too "cold" for me ... and I'm not that "SophistiCat"!

Fortunately, they now don't have a choice.

But anyway, this ban is coming in under the guise of protecting workers from passive smoking. So the federal law is a bit half arsed as some of the smaller places can designate themselves as smoking establishments.
So just as the non-smokers flock to the few non-smoking places now, the smokers can have a similar selection of bars in a month or so's time.

Smokers, tell me, there is a problem here with workers and passive smoking.
Disregarding the bullsh1t answer of "They don't have to work there if they don't want to.", what would have been the solution to this problem?

Really???? So the new cantonal laws for Zurich completely outlaw smoking, in all restaurants, pubs, and clubs, regardless of their size?????

Yes, you can get a lovely meal in a Migros or Starbucks.
I must remember these for next Valentines Day.

Actually, that isn't true. I know some restaurant owners who don't ban smoking in their establishments because they don't realise that they have the option. I was told by one that she was afraid of people complaining to the police if she didn't let them smoke. She didn't put out ashtrays but people still smoked anyway. What does that say about smokers?

She did say that she was looking forward to the ban coming into force because then the argument would stop, her staff would be happier and have less work to do. If you have ever worked where people smoke (I have) you would know that the amount of cleanup required for cigarettes and the like is atrocious.

Only owners that smoke don't want to ban smoking, and even some smoking owners don't mind the ban due to the cost of upkeep. Why do the anti-ban forces keep ignoring the facts?
