You should actually be able to transfer without the BIC - this isn't needed anymore. But these things can be a bit of trial sometimes with the cantonal banks. And the post... don't get me started on the post.
Regarding transferring to your son in the UK - you should actually try to make all your transfers with IBAN - why? Often they are cheaper, will get there faster and there's less chances of it being buggered up (often by the bank at the other end). Using it within the Eurozone also means that international payments must by law, be treated as a domestic payment (since neither Switzerland or the UK are in the Eurozone this point doesn't really apply here).
IBAN numbers can be obtained from British banks, I usually insist on them before I do any transfers to the UK.
I believe that everybody should be in the habit of giving only their IBAN, and insisting that others do the same. The more people that do, the more likely it is that the banks who should have implemented these systems years ago actually make them work properly!
Just for the record - I've been using domestic and international IBAN payments with CS for years now - using nothing but the IBAN and the account name.
Account names will always be required. Even if you had a numbered account international regulations stipulate that the name of the account holder must be given for all transfers. This makes a numbered account pretty much useless unless you plan on using it for cash deposits and withdrawls..
