Banking with IBAN

With IBAN it should be possible to make a payment within Switzerland if you only know the IBAN.

Some banks will only allow the IBAN with a BIC

Some banks aren't quite so far forward and have simply replaced account number with IBAN.

So with the bank you are with whats the score...

If you are not sure you can use the details found here to test and send 10 rappens to Mark to support the forum - he would really appreciate the gesture. http://www.fyvie.net/info_banking.html

Re: Banking with IBAN

FYI, CS are currently beta testing their new DirectNet banking system. They are testing it first on CS employees. It looks quite nice. Not sure on the IBAN functionality, will advise.

Re: Banking with IBAN

For making payments to an individual in Switzerland with a UBS account all you need is the IBAN. There is a place where entering the bank name is required but even if you don't know it you can go ahead and hit verify and it will add in the Clearing No. and bank name for you.

You should actually be able to transfer without the BIC - this isn't needed anymore. But these things can be a bit of trial sometimes with the cantonal banks. And the post... don't get me started on the post.

Regarding transferring to your son in the UK - you should actually try to make all your transfers with IBAN - why? Often they are cheaper, will get there faster and there's less chances of it being buggered up (often by the bank at the other end). Using it within the Eurozone also means that international payments must by law, be treated as a domestic payment (since neither Switzerland or the UK are in the Eurozone this point doesn't really apply here).

IBAN numbers can be obtained from British banks, I usually insist on them before I do any transfers to the UK.

I believe that everybody should be in the habit of giving only their IBAN, and insisting that others do the same. The more people that do, the more likely it is that the banks who should have implemented these systems years ago actually make them work properly!

Just for the record - I've been using domestic and international IBAN payments with CS for years now - using nothing but the IBAN and the account name.

Account names will always be required. Even if you had a numbered account international regulations stipulate that the name of the account holder must be given for all transfers. This makes a numbered account pretty much useless unless you plan on using it for cash deposits and withdrawls..

Re: Banking with IBAN

Just followed up woth Postfinance as to why they insist on a BIC even if you supply the IBAN Quote:

"Unfortunately not every bank branch have a direct SWIFT connection.
For this reason you need also the SWIFT Code an not only the IBAN Number."

I believe what they mean is that IBAN only your money goes to a large processing centre, only then is it forwarded.

However I still don't get it as once I've sent it to one branch of my bank, they should be able to forward it by decoding the iban which include the branch code.
