| | | General Return Policy of Shops
Hi, I'm from Canada, just got to switzerland a few weeks ago and will be working in Basel for the next few months.
I was wondering what the general return policy is. In Canada you can almost always return anything you dont like. I bought a pillow from Globus, but its 70franks, so I'm thinking about returning it. Have not used it, but it has been about two weeks. Anywhere else I can get a cheaper pillow?
Thanks |

Hello, sorry but there is no money back right in Switzerland. You can go to the customer service counter and maybe they take the cushion back as a gesture of goodwill if you show them the reciept. But generally, if the bought item isn't broken and no money back warranty was explicitely granted, you're out of luck.
I'm not sure but cheaper cushions may be available at the Migros stores with Mi-Casa assortment, like Migros Brunaupark near the Strassenverkehrsamt.

You can return goods. Even if they are not faulty, i've never had a problem. Just don't leave it too long and if you've taken off the hygenic covering you might be out of luck.

Same here, I've returned stuff before.
Not only there, but also at general stores like Coop, had some razor blades for over 3 weeks that I had been opened and saw were not the right make(not used obviously ) and then returned them for a full refund.....
Have'nt had any issues as yet.......

Just try it. My wife has even bargained the price down in Globus, so they are "up for it"! Negotiating that is.

I have returned things to gLobus and they don't like it if its more than 2 weeks since you bought it. That said even at 4 weeks they have accepted it - just with a bit of a grunt

You have to remember that under consumer law (in the countries that I know of) you have no legal right to return goods unless they are faulty in some way. Shops take returns of unwanted goods and make exchanges purely as a goodwill & customer service gesture.

Just to say that if you bought it in a sale, your chances of a return are very, very slim.
In general it is starting to get better in CH with stores like C&A and H&M having very good return conditions. On a saturday, I find it better to just buy stuff at H&M and go home to try them on instead of waiting 1/2 hr for a changing room. It's never been a problem and I even tell them what I'm doing.

It wasnt on sale, it was regular price.. the only reason I am a little hesitant is because I dont speak german so communication is hard.. if they say no, it might be awkward..hehe.. i have a feeling i'm gonna chicken out of this..
on a different note, anyone know a good place to get chicken in Basel?? All the grocery stores sell roasted chicken, either whole or just the leg and thigh.. where can i get the breast only??

Cheapest place I have found for pillows is IKEA in spritenbach (S12 from Zurich). Nice cheap restaurant there with some swedish food. http://www.ikea.com/ms/de_CH/ |

you might want to check out widerrufsrecht. This is the right to change your mind about a purchase. In Germany for example you have 14 days to return free of charge - a legal right. It also applies to goods bought online. In Switzerland, the land of consumer rights, it is 7 days but I think it only applies to credit applications!

Richard | | | | | The laws I am most familiar with are Scottish & English, they both have widerrufsrecht but it only applies to credit applications & if someone cold calls you. The Sale of Good act does not give an automatic right of return to a purchase which has no faults. Given how long ago my law lecture were I hope I am remembering correctly that my lecturer told us that this was common throughout Europe.

| | | Returns rules in CH
In many European countries the buyer has the right to return an item within 7 days without specifying a reason. Here in Switzerland I've experienced the opposite: when I decided to return something (actually to buy something else 3x more expensive always from the same shop) the guy of the shop told me that since the package was open he would have charged me 30 CHF from the price of the good. I've objected that the package has been just opened and everything else was perfect, but still no way. I then declined (he was a little surprised), turned towards the door and thought that was the last time I would have bought something from them.
I could have probably accepted more a complete denial but refusing with the exception of charging 30CHF seemed dishonest to me.
I'd be also interested to know if there is a law guaranteeing the right to return goods in this country or simply once you have bought something you have made an agreement with the devil.
To give an example (probably even too extreme), Misco gives the right to return the item within 30 days (!) without the need of specifying a reason.
Thanks for your replies as usual.

Thanks for your replies as usual. | | | | | I thought I read somewhere it was 14 days (either if the merchandise is defective or one is unhappy with whatever one bought), but it probably depends on the individual merchant or store's policy. Perhaps caveat emptor applies here more than elsewhere. I hate to sound jaded, but apart from food, drink, medicines and other incidentals, I don't buy much here because the prices are outrageous and the selection is limited. JMHO

I wanted to return someting, and buy something else instead when i took it to the store it was 15 days since i bought it, and they said they could not take it back i tried to argue my point, and say i want to exchange it, but i was useless they would not budge . Needless to say i never went back to the store again.
