Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

I was chatting to one of the Indian employees at work and he was telling me about how in India, Switzerland is the most desired honeymoon destination.

It's what Switzerland is most known for there, apparently. Googling Switzerland+India+honeymoon confirms the story.

I suppose you get a nice mountain landscape, but no fighting . . .

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

Specialy Indian movies (Bollywood) promoted Swiss as honeymoon destination. There are many movies made in Swiss exposing
the beauty of swiss Alps. You may also like to search the link between Swiss tourism department and bollywood movies to promote Swiss as tourist spot.

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

Why do Indians have the tendency to say "in Swiss", instead of in "Switzerland".

It's like saying "in Indian I like Kerala the most".

I heard that so many times.

Just wondering....

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

Perhaps it's because "Switzerland" is just too long. Or one of those things that has entered Indian English and now is impossible to change.

Of course, in German, we do say "In Indien"

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

True, true.
People threw strange glances at me, when I said I was going to Switzerland for a Ph.D.

Thinking of it, two points come to mind:
1. India, or atleast most parts, for most of the year are HOT. Visiting hill stations is the most common vacation idea. For the richer section of the society, a honeymoon calls for more and Switzerland (I really wanted to say Swiss here ) adequately offers.

2. Lot of Hindi movies, have SONGS - a good half a dozen. These are typically picturized as dance sequences and landscapes have traditionally been the favoured backdrops. Hence, many movies shoot such dance sequences in places like Switzerland (Aus and NZ are other popular places).

The Swiss can however, take comfort in that Swiss watches and Swiss chocolate is also reasonably well known in India. (Evidence - Pending gift requests)

Can't it be due to French influence and meant to be "Suisse",though written as Swiss!?

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

My Swiss husband and I went to India for our honeymoon. It was wonderful, but when people in the less urban or touristy areas found out he was from CH they treated him like a minor celebrity. People would call their friends over and ask to take his photo.

Also, in Goa there is a shop that sells only Swiss themed products, tee-shirts, fondu pots, etc. I didn't see that kind of stuff for any other country there besides India and CH.

There was an article in a high end magazine there promoting Asian Tourism that was titled, There are Destinations Other than Switzerland.

And he met an Indian waiter in Rajasthan who spoke Swiss German! He had all the Swiss customers teach him new words which he wrote down in this massive notebook. He spoke pretty well!

Our Indian friends said it was just the movie dance number thing too. It was really funny. Everyone there was really lovely anyway, but the Swiss connection got us a free desert or two.

That's because swiss is a adjective used from long time. Country official name is also " Swiss Confedration".

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

I guess it is because of the "Swiss made" labels on the watches. It is the same all over Asia.

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

What's the big deal with Swiss vs. Switzerland? I've seen this comment quite few times on this forum.
In my mother language it is Sviss, in the Swiss' mother language it is Schweiz, Suisse, Svizzera oder Svizra.
So it seams only to be the English native speakers who wants to point out that it is a -Land But can you really blame non-native English speaker for just say Swiss? Even the Swiss themself use the word Swiss quite a lot...

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

Well nearly 200,000 Indians visited Switzerland this year mostly for making movies and honeymoon - some came on guided tours and a few came on business who work in India for Nestle, Roche, UBS, Credit Suisse, Ecco and other companies of orgin from switzerland.

This number I got from the embassy at Delhi (the number of visa's issued) from all their consulates there.

This coming year the embassy at delhi is gearing itself to Issue upto half a million Visa's.

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

Simply for the prestige and the proudly telling everyone for the rest of their lives "We went to Switzerland for our honeymoon"

Otherwise theres much cheaper, better and more beautiful landscape nearer... but ooppss its across the border

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

True or also within India - Kashmir - but bragging about being in Switzerland is not that great as oh we went to Kashmir for our honeymoon..added on with all the choclates, watches, cow bells etc bought as gifts (Even though they are much cheaper in India to buy)

"Swiss Alps" covers about half the country. Can you be more specific?

Also, Zweisimmen is nowhere near Zürich. Which one did you mean? Sorry, I haven't watched these films so no idea.

Of the other locations you mention, I've been to Interlaken and Bern. Trümmelbach Falls, not yet but it's definitely on the list.

I'm curious now, what is your thesis about?

Re: Switzerland for Indian honeymooners

see this link.
I never went to Switzerland so I really don't know the specific locations.
I'm going to make a list with all the locations and the pictures next week.
Have you ever seen any Bollywood movies?

http://www.easydestination.net/blog/?itemid=1950
http://www.molodezhnaja.ch/india-ddlj.htm

Well my thesis is about Bollywoodtourism in Switzerland and what meaning fans of Yash Raj Films give to the locations that they have visited in Switzerland. Especially people who went with the YRF "Enchanted Journey".
