if anyone asks me if I'm cold (or more likely about my kids who are really hardy) I tend to say 'not at all, I'm British'. Somehow people kind of accept that the Brits have a genetic imperviousness to cold and damp so they just nod their heads as if to agree 'of course'.

I have the opposite problem, I'm from northern Europe and constantly get the "Ouch it's freezing.. but it must be allright for you, you're used to cold!"

No, I'm not, I hate cold and was cold all the time back home. Interestingly, I have no issues with hot weather. I guess there must have been some mixup and I was really supposed to be born in Malaysia or somewhere..

And it's true, every time I go to Uk I'm amazed as people run around in T-shirts and tiny dresses even in the middle of the winter. How do you do that? Practice? Copious amounts of alcohol?

The binge drinking surely helps, but I think the real reason is that the English are the most "insulated" of all Europeans.

Re: Aren't you cold???...

I've noticed a Europe-wide trend in recent years for the girlies to wear low riding jeans and a jacket which has a waist band which stops just below the ribs which then leaves an expanse of flesh to the elements.

The irony is that the jackets always look lovely and warm but there is a shortfall down to the waistband of the trousers.

This morning I noticed it again when I dropped my son off at his nursery; a girl rushing for the tram all bundled up against the cold with a scarf, warm jacket and winter boots but with 5cm of naked belly showing to the world above her trousers. Made me cold just looking at her.

Yeah,me too.. Makes me want to knit'em some chunky sweaters, instead of the midriffs they're wearing.

Skirts in winter work alrite, but exposed bellies could have mean consequences. I do not think it is particularly healthy to have one's kidneys exposed like this, god, we sound old..

Fashion never made any sense, did it. Scandinavian fashion is nice and warm

Hahaha--I've definitely noticed that women's "fashions" in Europe trump any comfort, practicality common sense or common logic.

Always get a chuckle when I see someone in high heels running for a bus.

Re: Aren't you cold???...

Actually high heels work well in snow and ice. The extra lb per inch on the heel helps cut through the ice and acts like a grip, while the extra high keeps most of the foot off the snow/ice and so helps it stay warm. Also I was always told that if you take care of the extremities the core takes care if itself.. Most heat is lost through the head so if a girl has a hat but a bare midriff she is still warmer than those without a hat.

I think I've mastered the art of running in heels for public transport but will NEVER EVER think of wearing heels on ice. Its bad for my shoes.

One winter I visited Cambridge, England, for a few days and was awed by the young women who wore jackets with plunging necklines (cleavage city!), miniskirts and high heels in the cold.

Re: Aren't you cold???...

keeping with the heels on ice debate, i gotta say i like to wear heels in the winter for the reasons stated before- the only problem is if the sole of the shoe is slippery- easily fixed by putting those stick on anti slip things. works wonders.

but a few years ago i got a pair of my favorite boots and i swear by them in winter, even though they have a 2 1/2 inch heel. they are cole haan boots in black and red suede, with nike air parts used in the bottom and fitted part of the shoes. i have run blocks in these boots and it's like i have sneakers on.

and even though as said every one is sick of leggings, i gotta say i love the warm and cozy feel of a sweater and a pair of leggings. it can be sessy and comfy at the same time (but please no stirrups!)

Wow,

that's quite the support for heels on ice.

I will definitely have to try them out!

Wow! your boots are jacked. Someone needs to invent triple spike reinforced heels, The only problem is that you can't have them on around little kids that spend time crawling.

Re: Aren't you cold???...

yea. the cole haan boots are awesome- and they are really well fitting, supportive and all that. the heels are hot too, so intelligent to work with nike to get a comfy fit while staying foxy.

but alas... i haven't seen too many really nice boots around here yet, what's going on? most of the boots i've seen are sooo pointy in front that they scare me and it adds like 3 inches of shoe that not only looks really bizarre but is really painful!

as for the crawling toddlers- i hear ya, these are strictly for nights without children

Re: Aren't you cold???...

wouldn't your toes get a bit chilly in those open toed shoes? And wet, if it's snowing?

but I'm currently wearing this DKNY pair, has anti-slip sole and is totally suitable for walking on icy roads

It must be right cos it's in the Daily Mail!

You lose heat through all parts of your body, including your head.

Here's an old thread on the subject

Sorry, must have misunderstood. Didnt realise that heels include boots. Heels = thin sexy heels for me. Having said that, I wouldnt wear my closed toe heels out on the ice either. God forbid the heels break. *sniff*

I have a pair of knee high black boots that are about 3 inches in heel height (but sturdier) as well. They have served me well the past 4-5 winters (and oh yes, I ran after lotsa of trams in them).
