Top Market... the best thing since sliced Lidl.

Yes, you may mock, but i'd like to take a moment to talk about the latest thing to rock my retail world, an event so momentous that... well ok, not really, it's yet another "cheapy budget" shop, but with a difference. It's pretty good.

Shop:
Top Market http://www.topmarket.ch/zurich.html

Location: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en-...A&z=16&iwloc=A

Binzstrase 12
8045 Zürich

I went in once before to check it out but didn't really have a good walk round... but the first thing I noticed was it had lots of Puma stuff. THis time when I went in (yesterday) I committed to having a really good root around, and came away really impressed.

Here is an overview of what they sell:

Footwear

Firstly, the aforementioned Puma stuff. Puma footwear is really good... and also pretty expensive for a sports brand here in CH. Snow boots cost 190 CHF, classic trainers cost 170 CHF... they are a reputable brand with good styling and good quality. They are also ridiculously cheap at Top Market. I checked a few prices for the sake of comparison and there were snow boots there for 60 CHF that are 190 CHF in the shops (Oeschinger). Trainers for 40 CHF that are 150 CHF in the shops. In fact, the average discount over the retail value seems to be a whopping 65%-ish. Im talking the high-end of the Puma range that are available this season... really good gore-tex walking boots, snow boots, the whole shebang.

They also have Converse as well as a few various other popular brands... something for most people I imagine.

General sportswear and items

It's not just Puma footwear there... they have almost everything sporting (football, generally) related... and not just from Puma, but a lot of Reebok too. Tracksuits, shorts, running tops, etc etc. Again, I am not talking about the cheapie end of the ranges... I am talking the more advanced Reebok running kit... high-quality waterproof outer shells for 19.95 CHF (70 CHF+ in shops like Oeschner sport), and the same with long-sleeved running tops.

Football-wise, there are tons of good discounted boots, gloves, shinpads... the whole shebang. They do some decent sports/gym bags, large and small, too.

General clothing

Mens and womens underwear, socks, ski socks, you know the drill...

Household and other stuff

At the very back of the shop is another section dedicated to household... it's not huge but it has some cheap yet decent branded duvets, pillows, sheets, etc... as well as kitchen utensils, cutlery, pots, pans... a lot of the general stuff you would find at Ikea, and some of it surprisingly good and sturdy quality. Suitcases can also be found, wicker washing baskets... blahblahblah.

In addition there are some good things like high-end electronic personal weighing scales (for people) for 40 CHF that track BMI, water/muscle mass, over days, weeks, months and years... I bought a set and it's serious quality, a bloomin bargain. Other stuff like Infra-red massagers can be found.

There are of course the obligatory droves of (branded, not no-name) washing up liquid, shower gels, smellies... all the stuff you would usually find in such a place.

------------------------------------------------

When at the till I gibbered away to the friendly guy who runs it, telling him I was impressed with the place and that I only lived down the road and that it was my first time shopping there... and he did me a 10% discount on the overall bill too. Not bad!

So now I have, within 5 minute walk from my apartment:

  • Sihl City + Co-op
  • Brunaupark
  • Lidl
  • Denner
  • Top Market

Gotta love 8045 Zurich.

So yeah... if you live nearby and need any of the stuff mentioned above then check it out. It's not the most glamorous looking place, but goods speak for themselves in my opinion. Hope some of you find it useful.

Yes, they are of course legit goods... it being a legit shop, and not the back of a car boot.

Most sport apparel have a high margin because of brand value, and not because of superior physical propertis. So long as you can't tell the difference between a fake climacool t-shirt and an original one, how does it matter?

Okay, one can talk of ethics, but just think of the sheer magnitude of connery of these big sports companies, it is not even a fair comparison

True, as long as the quality is good then I don't care about the brand name.

I think Swiss customs would not let anything fake in their country. Their level of scrutiny is legendary.

I would say so, yes.

In fact, even withinin sports goods market, if I buy critical stuff like climbing equipment or UV glasses I would happily pay the premuim and buy one from a brand which has authentications/testing standards. In this case as a customer I cannot distinguish by mere looking, the proterties of the product.

Not for shoes or apparel, where technology is generic and highly imitable, and product quality lies in the eye of the beholder. And connery abounds

I don't think I would necessarily agree with that statement, original items are often much better made in terms of quality and workmanship... you can try and imitate it but it won't be as effective or long-lasting. I would never buy fake sports shoes or apparell personally for this very reason.

I would say it is worthwhile giving a try to this store after limited choicy of goods on discount for my liking, which I get from Migros Sport XX and Oschner.

A big thanks Richdog! I went to check the Top Market today and spent over an hr. It rocks! I got a running kit and a few things for 60 CHF. They have great selection of sports wear. And it's only 10 min from where I live.

Re: Top Market... the best thing since sliced Lidl.

Enjoyed the Topmarket store in Seebach while it lasted, sadly it closed down last week , now have to go all the way the other side of town to get to it.. still worth it though once in a while...

I really recommend it, its got Puma/Adidas tshirts, track pants for 15-20 chf, sets for 50. Not to mention random household stuff, and L^'Oreal shampoos at 50% less than Migros

p.s: Its not fake stuff, all original... I got Puma shoes that retail online at GBP145 for CHF50 there !
