Hi everyone,

I am a new member of this website! I am considering leaving the UK to Switzerland as I cannot put up with the weather, not too good salary and expensive housing anymore! Can anyone tell me 10 reasons to leave the UK for Switzerland?

I take it you haven't looked at property rental rates here then, and many expats have a higher salary but less diposable income than at home due to the higher cost of living and compulsory insurance etc. So the streets here are not paved with gold.

1. Don't want to use this website anymore
2. You'll never learn the language
3. You hate bratwurst and cervelat
4. You miss the local pub scene
5. Can't stand the limited selection of cereal
6. Tired of being Mr. Perfect all the time
7. Don't want to feel inferior anymore
8. No luck in finding an ideal partner
9. Miss the family and friends
10. Miss giving hugs (US thing)

Wait. The above list is for people who want to leave Switzerland for the UK. I misread the original post. I was wrong!!!!!!!! Sorry about that.

So Papa Goose, in general, which country is better?

They both have merits. In many ways England is better, but in others Switzerland is better. It's a bit like saying "which is the best music ?"

Unfortunately these days it's just too easy to do that.

this is a very subjective question. You need to provide some other information otherwise you won't get a valid answer.

Better... too strong, preferable is better.

Ask me when I'm trying to find something decent on Swiss TV, paying the rent, trying to find a decent Indian restaurant, or wandering round a supermarket wondering how they come up with the prices and I'll tell you UK everytime.

Ask me when I'm skiing down a mountain, walking round late at night in safety, and travellling with ease in more than 2 cm's of snow and I'll say here.

On balance I have no plans to return to the UK, and prefer it here, but that is more emotional, if you look at numbers it's bloody expensive here so if you can afford it.....

Why are you trying to find something decent on Swiss TV, when you've got BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC Entertainment (well, maybe not), and ITV.



TeleBasel used to cover the local comedy club - mainly English speaking. But I could never figure out the schedule.

Kids terrorising neighbourhoods
Dirty streets
Live to Work attitude
Ignorant genetic-throwback on-benefits scum at every turn
The NHS
Lawlessness on the streets
Non-go areas due to muggings and other crimes
High tax/NI and nothing in return when you need help
The destruction of the native culture

I pay the same rent here as I did back in the UK, but I get a much nicer place here, and I haven't had a rent increase since I moved. In the UK it was considered justifiable to raise the rents every single year for doing absolutely F all.

Hopefully the property madness has stopped, but I get the feeling everyone is still under the illusion that they can get rich and fund their retirement by merely owning a house.

I have a chip on my shoulder about rental in the UK.

Apart from that, mountains are a good reason, as are, good quality of life, less traffic, less tress, sensible working hours, countryside.

How about this:

2 Lower taxes
3 Better public transportation
4 Better weather
5 Ease of doing business
6 Better school/education
7 Better healthcare
8 Not too noisy
9 Not a nation of heavy alcohol consumption
10 No council taxes!

I've consumed more alcohol since moving from the UK to here

may have no council tax here but we have no NHS and have to pay substantial health insurance, for every plus there is a minus and vice versa

Fleeing the UK will not bring utopia in your new destination, just read the complaints threads on here

6. No, subjective, there are outstanding schools in the UK and the top universities arguably in europe.
7. Yes but more expensive, if you pay for private cover in the UK as you pay for healthcare here you will have parallel treatment.

skiing is great, mountains are ace, very low crime, everything works, but its not all roses.

I always think of Switzerland as being a Mac computer.

I know Switzerland is extremely expensive country. That means in overall, at the same job position, I would have less saving money in Switzerland than the UK? Is that right?
