Re: Ten Reasons to Leave America for Switzerland

I have to say, in comparison with Canada, the speed limits are a lot higher here. (Especially according safety considerations, when building streets according to Canadian standards). But due to the absolute enforcement of exact speeding laws here, I find my self driving much faster, comfortably in Canada without issue. It's stressful for me to drive in Switzerland, and keep the speed at such precision that I maximize my speed and minimize my chance of getting a citation

Re: Ten Reasons to Leave America for Switzerland

going back to the OP...

- conspicuous lack of fundamental christians in the political system trying to inject their belief in the magic sky wizard into your child's school books, making their moral views legislation (abortion, sex ed, immunizations), and basically dumbing down the electorate

- you can drink a beer on a train or on the street and not be arrested

- its actually seen as an advantage here to be educated and smart, and not as an "elitist who is out of touch with dumbf- err i mean our america"

- cops who wont pepper spray you for exercising your rights

- airport agents who arent 100lb overweight thugs on a power trip when you travel and go thru security

- a govt which serves the will of the people instead of the bottom line of corporations

oh man there's so many more...

i'm glad to be from the US and i grew up there at the right time. man i am glad to have freakin' left that place. i barely recognize it when i go back.

Well in all honestly I only got my first speeding ticket a week before I left for CH after a good 13 years driving. It was 170 in an 80 zone, but you know Canadians, some kind talking and a quick court date reduced it down to 95 in an 80 and no demerit points. Don't think that would happen here

Double the speed limit can cost you and the car impounded. But if they would reinforce that, in about one month there would be no need for cops

yeah seriously. The Swiss are always shocked that we don't have photo-radar in Ontario. I inform them that we had it, but it wasn't very popular, and the tricks of "politics" rid us of it fairly quickly

I have to chuckle a bit at some of these posts.

I grew up in a small midwestern white-bread suburb, probably the kind of place one thinks of when stereotyping the US. In this sterile cultural wasteland, we had at our fingertips:

A college (university to y'all) - in addition to the academics adding to the flavor of the town, the college is home to several important literary collections and museums. They host regular lectures on a wide range of topics, open to the public. The college is also home to a world-class concert hall, both local musicians and international celebrities perform throughout the season.

A stately home turned park, museum and cultural center where concerts, art exhibits, theater groups perform throughout the year. The foundation also offers a variety of community support programs.

Another stately home turned into a forest preserve and equestrian center; the owners left the estate to the park district which now runs all sorts of programs (interactive learning, sports, activities for both children and adults).

An arboretum, not only gorgeous grounds but also a center for botanical research. The arboretum offers education programs for all ages, a chamber music series, a photographic society, hosts a nature artists' guild, sports and recreation, and offers a wide variety of seasonal events.

An historical society, which runs a small museum and sponsors a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

The local library - which hosts reading groups, discussions with authors, exhibitions, lectures for all ages.

Numerous amateur drama, music, literary, hobby societies. One can find a group of kindred spirits for pretty much any interest.

Local festivals, traditions a-plenty. Sure, our history is only 200-some years old, but we make the most of it. Probably because we have so little history we tend to celebrate and cherish it. Heck, for pageantry and local pride I'll stake our 4th of July parade against Sechselauten any day.

And then there are all the usual American small town things: school activities ranging from science club, drama club, music groups, and of course sports. Also scouts, park district classes, church groups, community groups, volunteer opportunities - all the trappings of suburban life.

And then down the road a bit is Chicago, where one just might be able to find few things of cultural interest...

Contrasting this to my village in 'culturally rich' Switzerland where we have:

A livestock auction and beauty contest.
A Chilbi.

Cultural activity is a 'destination' in many parts of Switzerland as well.

Point being: Any place on earth can be described as a culturally barren or rich - it's what you make of it that counts.

And, 3000 people!

The problem was you need to identify the driver .But the can target the car ,running a red light and the owner of the car get the fine ,no point deduction because they have to identify the driver

Strange, in 25+ years of living here, I've collected less citations than in a typical year in the US!

And I drive much faster here.

It's true, if you're interested in a hotdog, burger, milkshake or the only proper Dr Pepper left, the USA is the place.
The burgers at the Kentucky Saloon in Pratteln are pretty good, fwiw.

But I've never had a better burger than at Original Rudi's at Longwood Lake. 'Course, that was 35 years ago, but never mind.

Re: Ten Reasons to Leave America for Switzerland

If you only have 2 reasons, they might be:

1. No potential president named for a baseball glove.
2. No potential president named for an aquatic amphibian.

[QUOTE=aki;675988]How about advantages in the US.

6- No autobahn fee for cars (in most freeways).

You can easily rack up greater than 40chf/year on the toll roads in the northeast.
