It is also not that easy as an immigrant with limited English skills. I am sorry to say that you do get ripped off repeatedly by a lot of people in the US when you are a naive immigrant. I had a very difficult first year I must say. | | | | | You're in California....go to Oregon |

| | | Re: Ten reasons to leave Switzerland for the US | Quote: | | | | | Again, the original post by nomad66 isn't exactly on topic, but his/her point is that most Americans won't politely accept $2 bills as they don't believe they exist. If you're one of them -- well, they do. | | | | | i actually started collecting two dollar bills a long time ago.
and for point number 8- not feeling safe at sporting events. Have you ever gone to a Raiders (home) game?

| | | Re: Ten reasons to leave Switzerland for the US | Quote: | | | | | Except for the Autobahn vignette -- CHF 40 is a bargain for unlimited highway usage. (Granted, more expensive than the UK, Australia, Germany, US, etc, but still cheap compared to France, for a prime example.) | | | | | When you factor in the lower cost of petrol due to lower taxes, it turns out that Switzerland is one of the cheapest places to actually drive in Europe.
Unless you have to buy washer fluid or engine oil. Then Switzerland suddenly becomes staggeringly expensive, again.
Oh, well.

1. There are a lot of brazen Americans who aren't shy enough to stop from being pricks to you.
2. Parking spots are necessary in the US and sometimes they still feel like a scavenger hunt, even when you live in a smaller type city. Feel that gas burn as you drive only yourself around!
3. Spend spend spend and demand your money back. Don't worry about the hard time it will give someone else!
4. I could never purchase anything in the US at any given time. Even my local Ohioan grocery store just stopped having 24 hr times because of the economy.
5. I've never been scrutinized for smiling in Switzerland...
6. Apartments- If my poor mother who has been a generous landlord for the past 15 years used as many precautions as swiss landlords do, she wouldn't have gone through nearly the amount of crap she had to with regards to tenants not paying on time, owning guns, bringing on illegal new roomies, etc.
7. My US sports facilities were always pricey and went up every year!
8. I don't know if you've ever been to an OSU game, but if your plates are from Michigan you better hope you have insurance for your car... and let's just hope they don't see you in it. Talk about safety...
9. Yeah ditto about people hugging.
10. People DO NOT mind their own business in the states. IT seemed like every bus stop, no matter if I had headphones, a book, talking on the cell phone, I always had bums coming up to me to talk... or random crazy people. That almost never happens in Switzerland!
Sorry about your list, but it seemed unnecessarily negative. I know there are other ones out there for other countries, but like other people said... why are you complaining about Switzerland on an expat forum?

Sorry about your list, but it seemed unnecessarily negative. I know there are other ones out there for other countries, but like other people said... why are you complaining about Switzerland on an expat forum? | | | | | 1. Most people in the USA that seem to be pricks are usually making a diligent effort at being tw4ts.
2. Yes, it is the one serious problem as far as I am concerned. Auto use is excessive. Hence the availability of parking spaces. Usually.
3. True, but unimportant. Those people are being paid to deal with you. That is the business model in the US.
4. I lived in the backwaters of Iowa where the stores closed about the same time as stores here in Switzerland.
5. You must be smiling wrong. Or maybe you aren't raising your eyebrow ironically. I do agree with the OP that if you smile a lot here, as I do, you will be scrutinised. Maybe I am scrutinised because I am foreign, tall, fit, dirty blond hair?
6. Who is getting the shaft? It's tenants here landlords elsewhere... Depends on ones POV.
7. If you join the Y, you can participate in all sport activities, tennis, ball, swimming, etc.
8. At least here you don't tend to get hooliganism during the games. It is only afterwards that things may go wrong. Plus, you are talking about college sports, which is a huge difference as rivalries are epic.
9. You can forestall hugging in the USA by simply sticking out your hand. This works in Switzerland too.
10. Depends on how one defines minding ones own business. One will not have one rubbish bags dumped on ones front doorstep like here. One is unlikely to be run down in public simply for trying to walk down the street like here. People in Switzerland seem to spend a lot of time making sure that no one else breaks the rules if they can't. I guess it is nice that you have managed to round up the crazy people and keep them in control. Trust me I see plenty of these same sort of people in Lausanne in Place de Rippon. But come on we were talking about people minding their own business. You are talking about crazy people. You are comparing apples with oranges.
Where else would one complain about Switzerland and actually have valid stake in what they were complaining about? I take it that the Swiss aren't allow to complain, because they live here? Or are they the only ones allowed to complain? Or are only people outside Switzerland allowed to complain as anyone in Switzerland isn't allowed to be unhappy about anything that happens here?
I would understand if someone was being utterly hateful and seemed completely unhappy that it would be reasonable to ask why they were here. I have only seen one or two members of this forum that were so unpleasant or unhappy that they probably shouldn't have been here. But they had serious issues that may not have had much to do with Switzerland and much to do with them.
Personally, I would expect that most of us are here because of business based in Switzerland or with or because of Switzerland. Seems to me that most people here are here by at least indirect invitation of the Swiss government. Business is good and most Ex-Pats aren't too bitchy.

Actually, there is a Noodle House, attached to Angkor in Puls 5 (Kreis 5). They have some dishes that are spicy and pretty decent. I had to teach them how to do a good Kung Pao Chicken, but I like what they do now. They also do a decent Pho (pan Asian cuisine). Make sure you ask for 'real' spicy, not Swiss spicy...
