Public Wifi Hotspots/cafés

hello all,

I am just sitting in a very special place (according to my Zurich friends, they don't have anything similar...) - in "Mitte" in Basel. big space (once it was a bank), plugs for your laptop, free wireless lan, noone asking you to live when you already drink your orange juice, not a lot of smoke during the day, and the best latte macchiato in the city...
the question is then... if once I lived in Zurich and still needed a place to work, when being alone at home starts to be annoying? maybe you know? because now Mitte is one of the reasons why I still live in Basel

wish you all a good day,

agu

Re: working at public spaces (like in "Mitte" in Basel)

hello again,

looks like I didn't express myself properly (my English ?? I am sorry) - the question was about a public space where people can work on their private stuff I know, I shouldnt work during weekends etc., but in my jobs I am just expected to deliver results and no one ask me where and when I work...

so... no "Mitte" in Zurich?

best,
agu

Re: working at public spaces (like in "Mitte" in Basel)

I haven't been at Mitte but there are restaurants and cafés with public WLAN here (like the Plüsch near the Zwinglihaus bus stop or restaurants of American chains). But public spaces that have WLAN and a coffee source nearby? I think the closest match is the Lichthof in the main building of the university near the ETH/Universitätsspital tram stop. But the WLAN is only open for students.

When I want to work somewhere else than home I go to a parc in summer, and to the university or the Marche restaurant at the main train station, it's one of the places with self service where you don't have to consume something every fifteen minutes or you'll get wry looks from a waiter. I think they have Swisscom WLAN.

Her in Switzerland, there are another couple of networks, although Monzoon is my personal favourite.

PDA WLAN across switzerland?

Hi all,

I have a cycling holiday last week in July first in August and I am hoping to be able to send photos emails etc back home from time to time.

Back in UK I would find a hotspot and using BT or whomever or would use the mobile phone and dial up demon and would connect and carry on.

Here, probably 'cos of the language barrier as I am a dumb UK non German speaking contractor I cannot for the life of me work out the options. I have Cablecom at home and enquiries with them tell me that both Cablecom and Swisscom don't do a dial up internet service (new accounts anyway) any more which would have been an easy option.

Looking for advise on both Wifi connectivity (hotspot, cyber cafe etc) and using my mobile for pay as u go dial up access and will use it as blue tooth modem from PDA. Mobile is locked to Moblizone but I might pay to get it unlocked to go to another provider if it makes sense to do so.

I note that railway stations, airports, big hotel chains, starbucks and probably a handful of other outlets will be able to provide wifi but I cannot quite figure out how to connect... I have tried just get stumped trying to figure out how to get past the login as I do not have a WLAN account with swiss provider. Not looking for free ride, although that might be nice.

Almost every site I have found so far (including bluewin which I cannot quite work out how that works) is in DE, FR or IT only...

Don't need a technical description of how to setup connections that bit I know but how do you connect use the providers in Switzerland?

This is not being sad and connecting to work whilst on holiday. We plan/hope to use email to confirm reservations etc whilst on route.

Before I am asked, the PDA and mobile will be charged from bicycle dynamo whilst cycing, I built a little 5V regulator with a USB connector that connects to the dynamo, small 6V lead acid battery means the charging is pretty constant. Not going to be needing lights normally.

Anyone?

Dom

Re: Public Wifi Hotspots/cafés

There are a number of free places - like the Mayfair bar here in Montreux, where you can sit and browse all day long. Just stroll around and note if you anyone sitting with their laptops.

Otherwise, you can subscribe to swisscom which costs around Ł90 a month, but you can use it at airports and all over switzerland.

Thanks.

Swisscom said new dial up accounts no longer available, although I think you mean some WLAN account? Do they do pay as u go WLAN as don't need it all year just one month.

I am with cablecom at home. They do not seem to have a solution anyway.

Need something that might cover both WLAN and dial-up.

Re: Public Wifi Hotspots/cafés

The only dialup service I know in Switzerland is Sunrise Freesurf.

Phone Number: 0840 555 555
(internet connection and calls from fixnet are free, expect the normal cellphone fees)

Phone Number for foreign phones: +41 44 555 00 65
(free internet connection, local phone tariff, plus roaming fees)

Username: sunrise
Password: freesurf

In case of problems, their DNS servers:
193.192.227.3 (ns1.sunrise.ch)
195.141.56.5 (ns2.sunrise.ch)
194.158.230.53 (ns3.sunrise.ch)
194.230.1.5 (ns4.sunrise.ch)

I haven't used it for years but here you go...

0840 is charged at a local rate by some providers.

Free hotspots, could be the start of things to come. Have thought Swisscom's option of time used(where you can log on and off until your time is up) has been horrendously priced.

Yes Wi-fi LAN's. If you do a search of 'Available Connections' on your laptops Wireless Network connections (and you are in the area like at geneva airport ) then you can just connect to Swisscom. But it takes you to their site, where you need to open an account to browse. I've not paid, and don't know if you can pay monthly - probably.

or as everyone else calls them WLANs or Wireless LANs for both Swisscom and Orange you can purchase usage based vouchers if you are not a customer.
With Swisscom, you can also charge this to your Natel account per session via SMS .... James for a self proclaimed techie, you are really crap with all this stuff ....

Re: Public Wifi Hotspots/cafés

Glattzentrum offers free wi-fi but it is located in Zurich. You might consider this as an option in moving out of Basel perhaps?

Here is the sunrise webpage to their freesurf service. Useful to know if the details ever change.

Re: Public Wifi Hotspots/cafés

Very helpful thread.

Can I just ask in general, what is your favorite cafe/bar/restaurant that has free wi-fi? I live in Zurich, but I travel a lot too, so I wouldn't mind hearing about other cities too.

Re: Public Wifi Hotspots/cafés

As far as the paid accounts goes, does anyone know which way works out as the best value?

I have an Orange Optima 100 phone and asked Orange who said I can pay 0.30 CHF a minute to use their PWLAN, up to a maximum of 100CHF a month. That's 18CHF an hour.

If I buy time with my credit card from Monzoon, it's 9CHF an hour or 14CHF for two hours - so I can't understand why Orange is so expensive. Swisscom also works out very expensive.

Does anyone use any of these networks? Sunrise/Orange/Monzoon or Swisscom? The vouchers are really really expensive as well - the Swisscom voucher is something like 18 or 20 CHF an hour too.

I also can't find any info on the Monzoon site about monthly accounts or something like that.

Thanks!
