I once got a CHF 1000 note on our wedding day, I only realised that it was a 1000 note after I got so much change back at a store in the airport! |

I got my first 1000 CHF note today!
I went to get 400 CHFs from the ATM and since my parents are arriving today, I wanted to get 600 CHFs spending money for them.
I got it as a single 1000 CHF note.

Some ATMs even dispense them.
In the days prior to e-banking I frequently picked one or two up at the ATM and carried them across the road to the post office to pay my rent and other bills.
They were lovely crisp unused ones too. I do miss that feeling.

When I first arrived, I wanted to get my GA from the SSB. I thought since I didn't have my credit card yet and my limit on withdraws is only 3k/month, I should get the cash from the counter.
So, off I go to the UBS counter and asked for a few thousand in cash to pay for the GA. I thought, "oh, I might as well withdraw some spending money as well." Then I got 4 x 1,000 bills...
The SBB at the counter told me, "no, just pay for the first month [280?] and we'll bill you the rest." Due to laziness, I didn't redeposit the cash and took several months to use up the petty cash. Though, it was pretty cool to have several thousand francs in a few bills.

By way of contrast I was brought back down to earth last Saturday afternoon after a slightly too long 3 month spell on the island of Switzerland had warped my sense of paper money. In my first Euro cash transaction of 2012 the pleasant old boy running the car park I used in Portugal apologised and asked if I had anything smaller than a 10 Euro note! And I'd had to pressure the post office here in Schweiz to issue me with notes smaller than 50 Euros...

| | | Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them? | Quote: | | | | | Approximately 60% of the entire value of all Swiss bank notes in circulation are made up of notes of 1'000 CHF denomination (http://www.snb.ch/en/iabout/cash/id/cash_circulation).
Since I never held a 1'000 CHF note in my hands, I was wondering who hoards these masses of 1'000 CHF notes.
Could not find any studies out there that show who keeps them... Is it organized crime gangs or is it the inflation fearing grandmother that keeps these notes?
Just curious to what your opinion would be on this....

And certain of the "top tables" in CH only accept cash (margins are tighter on a fine meal than on pizza so why lose 4-6% with Amex). I had a couple of American colleagues at the time who were a little surprised when they found out that Girardet in Crissier didn't accept plastic.
The CHF 1'000 notes come in real handy for special occasions. The old CHF 500 notes were good as well but it was felt that the CHF 200 would be more practical so the 500 was replaced in the early '90s (by memory).
