Geneva: Awesome or Really Awesome?

After watching this video, I can't seem to make my mind up.

all very nice, except that Paris and Berlin are NOT suburbs of Geneva

While I much prefer Geneva. But that they include pictures of Paris and Berlin is a bit "typical" of the Geneva "heart of the earth" mind

Re: Geneva: Awesome or Really Awesome?

IMHO, Geneva and her lake are only fantastic in summer time. Get a Gemeinde ticket for CHF30 and travel down there. Then transfer to boat to go to the French side and have delicious icecreams paying in EU, later back in the boat and all the way to Lausanne. Next trip plan Laussane-Montreaux by ferry same way. The crew is nice, basking in the sun with squiet noise of propeller and nice breeze while sipping reasonably priced drinks. Voila c'est la vie!

Geneva IS far better than that video ! And the fountain really IS remarkable. In summer, there is a very nice public swimming place near it, accessible from the quarter "Paquis" (Quai du Mont Blanc / Rue du Léman) which is an exceedingly nice place. You can go swimming with the "Jet d'Eau" in direct sight, and the whole of the City around you.

and a nice small restaurant with some quite nice wines available at modest prices (50% of Mythenquai and Tiefenbrunnen in Zürich ! )

Geneva sports a nice range of Maghreb/Lebanon restaurants, primarily in the Paquis, which can also be praised

Attention: shopping generally price-wise tends to be Zurich plus 10%, while the restaurants are Zurich minus 10%. Restaurants in nearby France of course are much cheaper and in case of doubt far better.

Overall a great city

Re: Geneva: Awesome or Really Awesome?

That'll be the Bains des Paquis:

http://www.bains-des-paquis.ch/index.php

Which is excellent. Good price lunches, fondue and sauna/hamam in the winter, and swimming in the summer.

And overall I would say Very Excellent for Geneva, whether summer or winter. We moved here in 2008, and I can easily imagine staying forever.

Re: Geneva: Awesome or Really Awesome?

I am not too big on GE in summer - gets too dusty and smelly with all the eager motorbikes and nutty traffic, there aren't enough trees and lawns unlike other big cities I miss, to keep the temps and dust lower. I prefer the summers outside of the city, les bains aren't as crowded elsewhere while the view is as stunning. The boat suggestion is an excellent one, cool on the lake, amazing view, wonderful way to be in two countries withing couple of hours.

It fabulous for: studying, wicked libraries and library services, great resources of books in thrift stores, museums, sheet music and other obscure findings, interestingly odd cafes that only open couple of hours a week, geeky interest groups, fab gay bars and culture, my beloved Stich&Bitch action group, junky flee market, sales on anything you desire. It is condusive to art, muzzak, intellectual growth and good ol' bitchin'. It is liberal and people take interest in helping you out, argue with you or accept somebody's else's strange life and missfitting. It has beautiful history which is well planted within the region, linked to Annecy, etc. The job market is still interesting, rewarding go-getters and ambition, which is pretty positive these days. I enjoy the diversity of multicultural environment. My classmates are fabulous, from all corners of the world.

Big downfall, it's incredibly expensive, snobby and too packed with uber important and boring corporate busy bodies. In fact, it is too expensive for too many people to have a decent life there, you can see how poverty is hurting a lot of people there. The work conditions as they are known elsewhere are way harder in this competitive environment.

I hear what you're saying, but I can't seem to find a decent Lausanne music video on Youtube to help change my mind.

Sorry, but the music in this video is not about Lausanne, so it is immediately disqualified in my (very dodgy) book.

Three Doors Down. Yikes.
