Re: rubbish bags.

Basel ... no black bags. No stickers.

You need to go to the checkout and ask for a role of Bebbi Saggs. They're blue, and include a disposal tax.

I just paid 12Fr for a roll of 10 17l ones.

Edit: I'm in Basel Stadt.

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

"Abfal sack" are the blue Bebbi bags, I usually use the 35L, they are 23chf. So far at all three Coop near me you have to ask at the "convenience counter" (whatever they call it here) where they have the magazines and whatnot.

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

I live alone; someone gave me a 35L bag and it took me three weeks to fill it (all paper/cardboard is separated out and one day I'll return all my empty beer bottles and cans to the pfand thing in Markfkauf).

I prefer the smaller 17L ones.

After I first moved in, when I didn't know what was what or where to get the bags from, I used an old carrier bag, went to my local park late at night and stuffed my rubbish in the public bin

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

Baselland is different to Basel. Here, at least in my Gemeinde (it could vary by Gemeinde, I dont know), you buy any standard bags, 17l or 35l, and then put a sticker on them according to the volume. The stickers are available at some local shops, you will find a list on your Gemeinde's website, otherwise just ask any friendly chemist (apotheke) or Post employee the question.

>> There are no bebbi sacks in Basel-Land only Basel Stadt uses those.

In Basel Land we have regular bags and stickers.

Buy any kind of regular black rubbish bags from coop or migros.
You can get stickers from post office, pharmacies, petrol stations and some other random places. But buy them locally because every gemeinde has different stickers (it's to stop you from dumping your trash in someone else's area!)

Whoops! Sorry! I'd not even thought about the difference.

I'd really rather use simple black bags as we actually wind up having to use BOTH fairly often since the blue ones are not the sturdiest things ever created.

You can get the stickers at any Coop at Migros too (make sure it's one in your Gemeinde), but you have to ask the check-out lady for them. They usually hide them somewhere nearby...

Might save you the hassle of queing up at the Post Office...

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

Probably worth pointing out that you can also buy the stickers at your local gemeinde, who will patiently explain how the system works. For us, it's a full sticker for a 35l bag, and half-a-sticker for a 17l bag.

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

What exactly are the stickers for? Do they write your name on or something? And if you use normal bags how would they know is you?

Im in Geneva so for us its just a normal bag without stickers

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

The stickers show that the appropriate fee has been paid -- the trash collectors won't take a bag from the roadside that doesn't have a sticker on it.

As far as trying to cheat and use a bag without a sticker, the police have been known to go through bags of trash to look for any identifying information (eg, discarded mail) or rely on tip-offs from neighbours who witness the offenders dumping their trash.

Penalties are high -- high enough to ensure compliance, at least!

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

Its just two people at our house and we go through 3-4 bags a week. Ok so we have pets as well. For a family of five the cost must be very high

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

Wow, I guess it all depends on your behaviour and purchasing habits. There are two of us at Casa Idiot (plus two Idiot cats), and we manage most weeks with a single bag -- 35l most weeks, 17l occasionally if we've eaten out a few nights.

All of our glass / aluminum / tin / paper / cardboard / PET goes for recycling, shopping bags get used until they wear out, etc.

Our 'waste' each week is basically kitchen waste with very little else.

same here, 2 people + two cats and one bag is enough. Everything that can be recycled gets recycled, that is usually at least 2 extra bags, if not 3. It's a good way to encourage recycling - besides the environmental concerns, one sticker in my gemeinde is 2.50 and recycling is free, so for a bigger family the difference is quite noticeable.

Re: rubbish bags in Basel-Land

Correct. 2 people, 17l a week. All the kitchen waste goes into the compost bin in the neighbourhood, the papers get recycled on paper day, cardboard on cardboard day (paper and cardboard is free in our Gemeinde, dont know about the others), and so on.
