| | | Facebook sucks
Today I decided to quit Facebook. I miss the good old times when ppl actually used to socialize and talk to each other (in the real world). Who else is sick of this online nonsense? After reading another particulary silly status update from one of my 'friends' ('I just ate a cookie') I realized that it cannot get worse than that. Seriously we need to get out there again!

Most of my facebook friends are in a different continent. I'm not popping over for a chat.
You can block the status updates of friends who piss away their time on a fake farm, or sending flowers or whatever. In fact, you can now block the application (ie the farm thingy) instead. But for people who post stupid updates all the time, blocking is best. You can still message them or chat with them. Tell them to use twitter.
Or if you think they're totally retarded, defriend them.
I like facebook.

You need to get new friends.
My facebook rocks, and I find it is the perfect tool to boast about the awesomeness that is my life.

Use it...or don't. Not every app is going to appeal to everyone all the time.
FB has allowed me to connect with a lot of people that I have known over the years and share pictures with my family while I am abroad.
I do have some serious issues with privacy lately. That could cause me to leave...but the jury is still out.
But to condemn FB just because it causes people to interact less IRL is not a good reason to quit (JMO).

Privacy issues were a big issue for me, plus after receiving so many friend requests from people I'd swear I'd never met, I was getting seriously concerned that I was in the advanced stages of early-onset Alzheimer's.

Facebook is excellent. I worked with a Guy in Scotland 5 years ago, and by coincidence, we both work in Switzerland now. Because we had a common friend on Facebook we met again after 5 years, and that would be unlikely without facebook. But yes, it is annoying to have 25 requests to adopt a cow or have been hit by a sandwich in a food fight etc.
After I lived in 4 different countries, I dont see any better way to stay in touch at the moment. For me, it is an improved version of ICQ
If I plan to go somewhere with friends in the weekend, it is great for the mails where everybody gets the mail who said what and when at what time. Brilliant for 3+ people
Re. Privacy, I usually give fake details when I sign up for anything on the internet. but things like Facebook, where I want to be identified by friends, I just give name and city, and ignore the rest or if mandatory, -> rubbish data, like no@email.com
Doc.

I love FB too, it's great for keeping in touch with family abroad, especially photos.
A few months ago I got a message from an old school friend, a girl I hadn't seen in 25 years, from there we found another school friend, then another and another... until we had to create a school reunion group for just our year, there are now over 100 members, again of only our year - 1985 (I'm giving my middle age status away there! ) and we are meeting in August. It will be the first time many of us have seen one another in 25 years, that would never have happened without FaceBook.

Warning. If you receive a 'sexy video' on Facebook DO NOT open it. It is a virus and will be sent to all your friends |

Block annoying 'friends' - the best indicator for this are those people you find boring in real life, funny that they are the same wankers online.
Do not accept any of the apps. ANY!
Other than that FB is pretty darn cool.

I also de-activated Facebook a few months back as it got a bit silly for a while, and I didn't need to be friends with someone I worked with once several years ago, but just talking about it at a wake (!) the other day decided it's probably a good idea now I'm moving to CH. Good way to keep in touch with those who do care and if they are interested in seeing what I am up to in Basel then maybe now is the time to get back on. |

I held out for years. Once I decided to make the move across the pond, it seemed like the best way to keep in touch with my friends and family. And it is. I use it kinda like a blog platform, keeping people up to date with my activities as well as updating me with theirs. When I go back to the US, I vow to de-activate it. |
