Re: ASOS.com... UK fashion + UK prices + £5 shipping to CH = good.

Richdog - it is clear that you have used this company, made big savings and therefore recommend it.

HOWEVER, what is clear is that those saving are only applicable on SOME products. And that, even then, those savings can be wiped out completely by customs charges.

I highlighted earlier how a premium brand of jeans would only give you a saving of 33chf - which would be wiped out if there was a 35chf custom charge.

With ANY online shopping based outside of Switzerland you run a risk of being nabbed by customs. If you come out ahead all the better - but there is sufficient evidence to suggest that to be never caught is unlikely.

The title of the thread is, in my view, misleading.

I am wondering if you did in the end save something if you get them from the UK for cheap, have to pay custom fees, have to pay to get them changed here...

Saying UK fashion at prices and £5 delivery is "good" is misleading? I never said that you didn't have to apply some common sense.

It certainly is. I asked Roger Penrose to re-work it and he came up with the result "not bad".

You can avoid customs by sending it to a german address and pick up your stuff from there... Its about a 25min drive but its only worth it, if you order quite an amount... call this nr. very friendly person helped me all the way through...
xxxx he charges like a minimum fee..

A direct question and I would love to have a direct answer: In all your posts you are either advertising the same shop in Germany or "some guy you know" for international cash "transfers". Are you affiliated in any way to any of the two businesses?

mandmdirect.com also offer a similar service. As Richdog says, if you know the brand, size and style you're away.

Re: ASOS.com... UK fashion + UK prices + £5 shipping to CH = good.

I ordered 3 times from ASOS, and I have to say I cancel the idea to do international online shopping to Switzerland anymore because the VAT and customs tax are really a pain to me. These two taxes are just too much, and only the last time I found out all the item-prices on ASOS are UK-VAT included, which means the Swiss VAT and customs tax are calculated above on the wrong amount, so I was totally being ripped off by both governments! Also we can forget about asking those over-charged money back, because asking tax officers to re-calculating your wrong taxable amount need to pay them exatral money, in another word, another exatural uncalled for expense for the whole online shopping thing.

Same here, love it, have been shopping with them for ages now and never ever been let down. Even their own asos brand is good stuff.

When I need a dress for a special occasion I check out the Karen Millen and Coast stuff. On the Karen Millen website shipping costs 20£...
you don't need to ship them all the way from UK. They have got Karen Millen shops in zurich and geneva.

didn't buy mail order to save money - there are simply things you can't get in switzerland.

Wait, I thought KM doesnt deliver to Switzerland? I am going to go bang my head against the wall if they do - because I've been paying Swiss KM prices.

I've always been stung by customs here too. Even if my total bill came up just shy of the 50 quid mark. No joy.

Most of the jeans I've seen on Asos are available in Zürich . . . Nudie, Acne, Surface to Air . . .

Which ones aren't available here?

Obviously, Asos is cheaper though.

One brand I can't find in Zürich is Norse Project, but that's not on Asos either.

Yes, but an average KM dress in the UK costs £150 which is approx 250 CHF. But KM dresses here cost at least 300 CHF onwards just because we have to pay for the import and transportation costs. Do the math.

Unless you are lucky with customs - which I am not. I even got slapped taxes for some la senza PJs I ordered from the UK. You think they'll let it go but noooo. Have to even pay Swiss Post admin charges. I am resigned to generic H&M and Zara stuff till I next visit the UK again. I miss Coast, Next and Gap *weeps*

Re: ASOS.com... UK fashion + UK prices + £5 shipping to CH = good.

Karen Millen official website don't ship their products to switzerland, but you can do online shopping via other online shops, such as ASOS. However, buying from ASOS has to pay UK VAT ( website price included) first (possible to return back to you after 30 days after purchase), so the swiss side will charge your VAT and custom taxes based on total amount instead of net amount, since ASOS doesn't clarify the item original net price on the order statement that I have found out. And btw, shipping fee is variable, I do online shopping from ASOS in UK, and Victoria secrets, Nordstom in US, the delivery fee are all above £5. Every time the VAT+ custom taxes are quite high, since the total price is not low.

Seriously, it's not about "do maths". I just prefer to try on different Karen millen dresses, shirts, sweaters myself to see if they fit me or not, if they look good on me or not, and I don't need to spend money sending them back if I find out I don't like them after receiving from online order. This is not a few more Frs can measure. I thought there would be people perfer to try on personally like me, so I was just being kind to tell the other poster, there is actually a local store. Don't get excited about it.

I know. But a dress that cost 150£ in the UK costs 399 here...therefore I'd rather go all the "trouble" to order it online

Ups, got my facts wrong - it is french connection which ships to Switzerland for a premium charge of 20£. Sorry fo everyone who got excited

But I don't agree with you when you say that you save only a few francs when buying online. Pound sterling used to be a lot more expensive two-three years ago but now I think it is really worth shopping in the UK. For Karen Millen it has made a difference. I go in their shop and try the dress on - if it fits and it is nice I order it online (on asos).

I am not greedy but I studied for a long time (went for a post-degree etc) and for years I really had to watch my money. So today, even if it is only 20.- I save by buying online, I would do it. That is my way of thinking - nobody is forced to do it that way

Yes of course there are people who will prefer spending hours in the store trying on the clothes and preening in front of the mirror.

But there are just as many people who are comfortable with their sizes to order online. Obviously you arent one of them and thats cool. I was just pointing out that there is a huge difference (and certainly NOT "not a few more Frs" - like you said) in UK brand prices here in Zürich which some of us arent too happy to pay - unless we are truly desperate.

So you are more than welcomed to pay much more if you are happy to do so. Dont take the phrase "do the Math" so personally.

PS: Sorry for the hijack - back to ASOS....
