buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

Hi there!
I am look for a bicycle to buy, and was planing to go to the Velomarkt this Saturday. Anyone with experience in buying bikes interested in joining me? Ok, let's be more realistic...do you have any advice on how to choose the right bike....I need something simple (would rather take mountain then city bike), but the thing is that I don't see the difference between 100CHF and 300CHF bikes and I just want to make sure prior to giving my money that I will get something which won't break into peaces at the next corner (some people told me they had such experience).

you will be lucky to get a bike for that money at the velo markt.. i had a look once and have never bothered again - the costs are not that far off from a normal shop.

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

I'd second Rob's advice above. The Velomarkt is not as cheap as you would expect. The second hand market for bikes in Basel is pretty good, and you will probably find better deals on Unibas or at the Flohmarkt than you would at the Velomarkt. That said, at the Velomarkt you will also have a big selection of bikes all next to each other, so you can compare them and get an idea of the bike you really want.

There are so many points to consider when surveying a second hand bike, it's hard to know where to start. Best is to bring a technically-minded friend with you. It's all too easy to get screwed.

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

There are several second hand bike shops dotted around basel, including this one:

bikes on Dornachestrasse:
Isi-Velowerkstatt
Dornacherstrasse 277
4053 Basel, Switzerland
061 332 22 00

There's a couple of threads on the EF related to this topic if you search "second hand bike Basel".

That'll help you find a cheap(ish) bike, but won't help you with choosing (the right) one.

Velomarkt in Basel: http://www.velomaerkte.ch/bike_english.php

Next one this weekend.

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

well.. I got a mountain bike at the velo bourse or whatever it's called at HelvetiaPlatz ( once a month ), and I paid 70chf for it.
Personally I haven't heard anyone complaining about bikes bought from there.
so far I've had no pbs with the bike ( apart from flat tyre - mea culpa ).. granted that I couldn't go over the Alpe d'Huez , but really depends what you need it for.. from point a to point B, and to be able to get home after night buses finish = no problems at all

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

I scoured the Velomarkts and Flea Markets for months until I picked up a gem.

I guess the important thing to note is that you may get a dud.... but you know this.

Keep in mind EXACTLY what you want the bike for, and what you are going to use it for.... this helps keep your selection in focus.

At the Velomarkts, you can ride the bikes around a bit, so you will hear clunks and groans etc, you don't need to be a bike mechanic to know that something is wrong.

Another tip..... drop by the Velomarkts around midnight the night before. They unload the bikes then, and twice I was offered dodgey deals to pick up a bike cheaper - but of course, you forfeit the chance to see it in the light of day and test it a bit.

Hit the Velomarkts as early as possible. I still go to them just to see what people are selling. I still can't believe that there are things like 'tandem' bikes etc.
Some of these things for sale are fantastic (unreasonably priced, but cool to look at).

This is true. My velomarkt bike was actually several bikes that had been merged into my Frankenstein moutain bike. I hadn't realized it until a tire had gone flat and I discovered the tires didn't match. On closer inspection we discovered other mismatches as well. It doesn't really make a big difference to me as long as it all works, but I would have probably passed on buying it had I known any better

so, went there, found nothing
there are some cheep bikes, but not in good shape
I'll try one store of second hand bicycles in Klein Basel...it's a bit more expensive, but I think I have greater chances to find a decent bike there.

Thank you all for your replies!

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

Thanks rob1...though I went to Lorrach as well, a couple of weeks ago...I found 2 small local bicycle shops (one is near the train station, the other one is more centrally located), and prices start at 400 euros. But I've heard there is a big shopping center nearby Lorrach were you can find low quality bikes for like 150-200euros...I dropped the idea.

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

I saw some decent looking bikes at Marktkauf in Weil am Rhine last year and one or two promising looking ones at Coop Bau + Hobby last year as well... I've not paid attention this year but I mention it as a suggestion of other places to check out before making a decision.

I tend to lean toward getting mountain bikes or "cruiser" typess as they tend to have wider tires and wider seats.

I remember having a VERY sore hiney after getting a bicycle with the average seat back in the day... sooo along with looking at the bikes themselves, you may want to have a look for "must have" acessories (in my case it was a gel padded seat cover).

Re: buying second hand cheap bike at Velomarkt, Margarethen Basel

Echoing others, they are not cheap. (In fact I'd go as far as to say that a fair amount of the prices are plain urine taking for the condition that the bike is in).
I've been to to the Zurich Helvetiaplatz one & the Wollishofen one a few times combined & never really found anything particuarly worthy of it's price tag within the budget I had (150 - 300).
Mrs Leafy bought an very nice old timer from one in Winterthur a couple of months ago, but it wasn't that cheap either & had to be returned 3 times before the organizers fixed all it's hidden faults to a standard that she found acceptable for the price she'd paid for it.
