| | | What to have for Dinner?
Okay, I couldn't decide where to post this, so sorry if someone has to move it! I know it could fit under Food/Drink, however this is a daily occurrence for me!
Every day is the same... WHAT to make for dinner? In the states my Mum always gives me the best ideas, but over here it is a bit more difficult finding ingredients, ect. Sooo, I need some recipe ideas from you EF'ers! Here is the scoop, I am a vegetarian, but my husband eats meat. I never make meat for him however, poor chap. The other day he had the nerve to tell me I only make the same things over and over! However when I ask him what he is hungry for, he suggests nothing!
So, tell me what's cooking, and hope you are having a great week! |

Heh heh i know how you feel. Some time ago a member posted a link to a webpage that lets you select what ingredients you have and suggests stuff to cook. I will try to find it now otherwise later when i go home.
I have the same problem. I think my better half is kinda bored with grilled stuff all the time but since my cooking skills are worse than my French i let him suffer

| | | | | How about lightly toasted husband sweetbreads until he gets off the sofa and into the kitchen to cook himself the dead animals that he wants and you don't?

I only cook when I feel like it. Hubby has a pair of hands as well and I bought him some Jamie Oliver books - if yours has not cooked much before, I can recommend Ministry of Food.
Otherwise, I like this site http://www.epicurious.com/ |

Yep, it seems to be a bit more of a challenge over here than back home, but maybe thats just psychological.. As for us, I'm going to do some sort of omelette or fritttata tonight, I havn't found a recipe yet but there is still plenty of time left in the day |

Sounds like mine, thankfully he works late shift some nights so I don't always have to come up with a complex evening meal (for myself, I usually just put a few cubes of cheese in some salad and call it done).
I have the added bonus of having a hubby who is trained to cook but STILL orders pizza / eats "heat and eat" whenever I'm not doing the cooking.
Edit:
To address the topic though, I usually keep some frozen chopped chicken breast in the freezer which I like because it is pretty versatile. I can toss it with some salsa and bake, toss it with some Italian dressing and also bake, sprinkle curry seasonings, etc etc... "stir fry", bake, skewer and grill, it all works pretty well - and substituting tofu for the chicken should work for pretty much any of that as well.
I think the main thing is to make sure your spice cupboard is well stocked, after that it's just a matter of putting together in a way that you enjoy.

I struggle too!! I remember my mum used to always ask "what shall we eat tonight" and I would shrug and say "whatever" wondering why she couldn't figure it out! Now I have a family of my own, I truly understand where she was coming from! I once went out with someone who's mum would cook the same thing every Monday, same thing every Tuesday so on and so forth!
Now back to recipe trawling....

Now back to recipe trawling.... | | | | | I know! Me too, and I am afraid of being sucked into a habit like this!! I am home all day and don't work, while the husband works. SO I don't really feel like it should be his responsibility to cook. On the weekends he will do the ordering of the chinese.. his contribution Sooo, I think I have decided on a dressed chopped Caprese salad, and scalloped potatoes... now if only for a main! |

I spent 2 years lodging with a family down on the South Coast and the mother had a very organised weekly menu... 15 years later and its still etched into my brain
Monday - Shepherds pie and salad
Tuesday - Grilled meat, salad and baked potato
Wednesday - Lasagne and salad
Thursday - Indian/Thai curry and rice
Friday - Fried fish and chips and mushy peas
Saturday - Kitchen closed
Sunday - Roast beef/lamb + all the trimmings
There was some minor substitution here and there, but more often than not what you see above is what she fed her family and me. Obviously it won't work for everyone, especially if you're driven by your cravings | | This user would like to thank Castro for this useful post: | |

hmmmmmm.....have been having the same problem since I arrived. Trying to provide variety and a balanced diet. Not so easy but as I am at home am trying to cook properly. However I still resort to some of the old brit favs like ham, egg and chips .
I just bought myself the UK Masterchef cookbook but so far I've just been reading it! Got a slow cooker book on the way, The Book Depository has some fairly cheap cook books if you need a little inspiration.

I'm amazed that so many English families still cook and eat in such a regimented and dull way.
If I've had something two or three weeks running, I don't normally want to eat it again for months.

do you not just go into the shop and see what looks good and fresh, buy it and then get it home then figure out what to do with it??
Thats my usual method of attack.
just keep your spice cupboard and you herb window box full to the brim,,,,,,,
failing that, http://www.supercook.com/
there are some 'odd-balls' in there mind you, so be careful.
(Fennel ice cream!!!! )
hmmmmm, one thinks not!
