It seems that the Swiss will have a new anthem next year

Re: Swiss National Hymn

I think that's a shame. I'm not Swiss, but some traditions should stay as they are. I'm British, I am not a staunch royalist though I like the royals, and if anyone suggested a new national anthem I would be sad to lose the old one.

Well 30 years isn't that great a tradition, is it?

Lots of people here are in favour of the traditional OLD anthem Heil Dir Helvetia

which was in force into the 1960ies

The new one never got really accepted. And few people will be sad if that one ( "Trittst im Morgenrock daher"") is dropped.

Switzerland of course could adopt this tune

Since somebody else started a thread on this subject, I can ask this question which has puzzled me. I've also looked up information on the Swiss national anthem, and I've discovered not only is there an English translation, but the words I find are almost always the same.

Some sources have described these as "official" lyrics. Obviously they can't be official since English isn't an official language of Switzerland, but I wonder if there are occasions where the Swiss Hymn is sung in English...
When the morning skies grow red,
and over us their radiance shed
Thou, O Lord, appeareth in their light
when the alps glow bright with splendor,
pray to God, to Him surrender
for you feel and understand
that He dwelleth in this land.

In the sunset Thou art night
and beyond the starry sky
Thou, O loving father, ever near,
when to Heaven we are departing
joy and bliss Thou'lt be imparting
for we feel and understand
that Thou dwellest in this land.

When dark clouds enshroud the hills
and gray mist the valley fills
yet Thou art not hidden from thy sons
pierce the gloom in which we cower
with Thy sunshine's cleansing power
then we'll feel and understand
that God dwelleth in this land.

So folks, this song will be sung all over Switzerland on Friday 1st August,
time to get in the mood, and learn the words?

The music is dreary, a bit like the UK "God save the Queen"

Shame on me, but I actually don't know the lyrics of my National Hymn...

But now, I'm Genevan and, as kid I learnt to sing the "A la belle Escalade" which is a song related an event that took place in the year 1602.

Unlike the Spanish one, where I've actually memorized all seven verses.

La la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la
etc.

(although apparently only the first and third are sung these days, with the fourth being banned, so be careful how you pronounce la la la)

Trust me I'm not saying this to suck up to Wolli, but anybody who thinks the melody to "God Save The Queen/America/Heil dir Helvetia" is dreary hasn't heard it played correctly.

or been to an England rugger game.

(lthough you've got to hand it to the Welsh, they know how to sing "Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi" with proper passion)

I don't understand why ENGLAND's national football team uses "God Save The Queen" instead of "Jerusalem" like the rugby team does.

I can't understand why they sing "Jerusalem", it's not the national anthem and never has been.

Because there isn't an England national anthem (as opposed to a UK one) and never has been.

I honestly think the Scottish and Welsh football associations should swallow their pride and allow a British national football team to play in the FIFA World Cup tournament. (The reason I didn't include Northern Ireland isn't because I don't think they count, but that I don't think they'd mind playing as part of a British team rather than a NI team. It's a different story for Scotland and Wales.) But as long as England competes separately, there SHOULD be an English national anthem, and "Jerusalem" is the obvious candidate. After all if Scotland, Wales, and NI don't sing "God Save The Queen", why should England?

The first time I remember hearing "Jerusalem" was in this Monty Python sketch, and God help me I think of it a bit on the few occasions I hear it again:

Re: Swiss National Hymn

If it were up to me, I agree with Wolli---"Heil dir Helvetia" is a rousing national anthem and I don't think the Swiss need to apologise over borrowing the melody. But if they do create a new song, I wonder if they will go the route of South Africa. There are several national anthems with lyrics in two or more languages, but South Africa is unique in that the anthem is intended to be sung in five languages---Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, and English. Could a new Swiss national anthem have lyrics in German, French, Italian, and Romansch?

(Of course, keep in mind that it's very difficult for many South Africans to sing their national anthem, so it's probably best just to have four different sets of lyrics.)
