Your in deep shit with my wife
Please give my apologies to your wife. If Northern Ireland WERE to have a separate "national anthem" to play at sporting events, the melody to Londonderry Air (or "Danny Boy") would be the most appropriate. I also think it would beat the other three hands down.

Re: Swiss National Hymn

Just for the hell of it, I am thinking of English lyrics to "Heil dir Helvetia". This is the closest I have so far:

_______________
_______________
I hear thy call
Ave, Helvetia!
Salvabe mea patria!
All of Switzerland for one!
One Swiss for all!

I do not envy how tough a job it will be for the Swiss to write completely new lyrics AND a melody for their national anthem.

Quote:
Do you call, my Fatherland?
See us with heart and hand
All devoted to you!
Hail to you, Helvetia!
You still have sons,
Like Saint Jacob saw them,
Joyfully hasten to the battle.

There where the circle of the Alps
Does not protect you,
Rampart made by God,
There we stand like rocks,
Never turn pale, facing the danger,
Happy even in the lethal stroke,
Pain be their mockery.

You nourish us mild and true,
Raise us so strong and free,
You highland's bosom!
So be then in the field of danger,
When destruction threatens you,
Blood us a dawn
Labour of joy.

Gentle like the alpine lake,
Stormless on the glacial snow
Our courage grows.
Dreadfully the lake rages, terrified,
When thunderstorm overcasts,
So do we, when awakened to the battle,
Rage against rage.

And like avalanche's load
Crashes down fast like a flash –
Grave all around –
Throw in the alpine path,
When the destroyer advances,
Bullet's seed all around
Fatally heavy.

Free and forever free!
This be our battle cry!
Re-echo our hearth!
Free lives, who is ready to die,
Free, who ascends the hero's path
Ahead like a Tell,
Never withdraw.

But where peace smiles,
After the raging battles
Crowding game;
O, there be more beautiful in store,
Far from the weapon's horror
Home, to build your fortune,
Be our goal!

Re: Swiss National Hymn

Let me be more specific---I wasn't trying to translate the German/French/Italian lyrics because that's been done. (Wikipedia gave up when it came to Romansch.) I was trying to write English lyrics that could be SUNG to that melody. Thanks, anyway though---I appreciate reading those!

I don't understand why ENGLAND's national football team uses "God Save The Queen" instead of "Jerusalem" like the rugby team does.
I don't get why both don't simply follow Billy Connolly's suggestion and use the theme tune from the Archers.

I don't really like our Swiss Hymn- but why change? It is what it is- and leave it at that.

Looks like this was composed before the official competition was launched for a new Swiss anthem. Don't know the words, but it's got a catchy melody:

You should send that to DJ Otzi, I'm sure he'd make a good Alpenpop or turbo schlager out of that.

Alright, as long as it is the PRE 1961 anthem. So it just ought to be changed BACK

the Swiss national hymn resembles something

I recently discovered what the Swiss national hymn reminds me of !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU8cPuj-UHY Santa lucia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0Wgto7__-c the Swiss hymn

listen to the first two sentences, an amazing resemblance !

The new Swiss national anthem i belive was inroduced around 1920 because the old anthem did sound too similar with the UK Good save the Queen.

But by law it is still provisional not an official anthem.
Lichtenstein actually still uses ´God save the queen´
Oben am jungen Rhein
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60RJEKhDjHM

Lots of countries have this as their anthem, or did. It's a very old tune, that only became popular as ´God Save the Queen´ after about 1745.

Here is the old Swiss one:
National Anthem of Switzerland (1850-1961) - "Rufst du, mein Vaterland!"

They're all saying basically the same things, these anthems do don't they. All a little ridiculous too.
I'd say its the tune, the music which makes some more popular than others.

For the Swiss anthem I'd say they should lighten up the tune a bit. It is so so so heavy, like huge mountain trolls walking up a steep hill!!! Boum...boum...boumm!!!

Apparently the response so far to the six suggested new versions is... less than positive:
