Re: Swiss Mystery #5: who is that nice old woman at Zurich HB?

Interesting thread -- I'll have to ask my partner tonight about some of these folks -- see if he's taking care of any of them now -- he works at the local psychiatric hospital

Re: Swiss Mystery #5: who is that nice old woman at Zurich HB?

You know Ive always wondered what her story was. Sometimes I would be waiting nearby and see her, and she would smile at me. I thought she was a really sweet old lady.

I almost feel like crying for some reason. I want to do something nice for her, but I wouldn't know what to get her. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've encountered the skater guy last week while cycling, he skated on my lane in the wrong direction but we didn't collide. Same outfit as always.
I think it is not much of a problem to collide with him. When I see him, he is always pointing in the direction he intends to go.

I think what he needs is an advertising agent to sell ad space on his legs. Any volunteers?

The SVP seem to get a fair amount of coverage in the legs market, they could be interested...

You lot are cheering me up - and there was I missing a touch of eccentricity in the Swiss!

The old lady must have real mobility problems if she needs crutches AND a wheelchair....

If she had real mobility problems she wouldn't need the crutches, just the wheelchair. She must be able to get about a little, hence the crutches.

Re: Swiss Mystery #5: who is that nice old woman at Zurich HB?

Has anybody else seen the Umbrella Cycling Man (as I'm sure nobody else calls him). He rides around on a fairly normal looking bike, only he has a golf umbrella over the front and then has erected some kind of wood, carboard and see through plastic construction over the back, presumably to protect him from the rain.

Then, to top that off he has made something akin to a boat tiller on the back, and the whole get up is brightly painted. The last time I saw him he was riding behind a tram down Bahnhofstrasse and patiently waiting every time it had to stop (at stops and at the junction at the top).

Anyone else spotted him? Or know anything about him?

There's also the people who carry around parrots on their shoulders . . . or is that not unusual enough for this thread?

I wondered who this lady was as I saw her last week and had not seen her for some time. I assume she's the one-and-the-same from this thread?

Someone should donate her an EF t-shirt with a QR code to this thread on it.

She doesn't normally object if you get her something to drink or something small to eat (but ask he first).

The old lady's name is sister Frieda and she's been here for almost 20 years now.

There has even been a song written about her by balladeer Franz Hohler, but it's not on youtube.

Re: Swiss Mystery #5: who is that nice old woman at Zurich HB?

I haven't yet had the pleasure to see her, but reading this thread, I cannot help but think that maybe she is an angel. They take on the most unexpected appearances, at times.

P.S. In case someone is wondering, I am not being sarcastic/ironic. I mean the statement above with the utmost respect.

Sister Frieda always reminds me of the movie Simon Birch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124879 and John Irving's book "A Prayer for Owen Meany" -

maybe blessing the travellers at HB is her purpose in life...

Re: Swiss Mystery #5: who is that nice old woman at Zurich HB?

Now I kinda wish we had someone like that lady here in Basel. (:

The famous people around here are the woman with the long white hair who stares and smiles at people, and two guys I always see around asking for money (unrelated, I suppose).

Once, while leaving a concert at Kaserne and refusing to give one of those guys money, hubby and I were called "heartless assholes" in Swiss German. Not that I know how it would sound, but since the tone was not nice and after I insisted and insisted, hubby finally told me what he had said.

Lovely guy. Cannot really get angry, though.

Re: Swiss Mystery #5: who is that nice old woman at Zurich HB?

In Basel in between the zoo (hehe) and the edge of the city there is a woman who wants to hug people. She is about 50 and dresses a little like a hippe i.e. like the 60's and 70's peace activists. Nice to see her in action.
