German TV for preschooler

Hello,

I'm living in the USA at the moment, my husband is Swiss and speaks Swiss German with my son. We have plans to move to Bern within 2 years and I'm trying to expose my son to as much German as possible.

Are there any Swiss German television shows that are aimed at preschoolers? I'm aware of Sesamstrasse and Hallo Spencer, but that's pretty much it.

I prefer very educational shows... Was hoping Switzerland would have created something for the little ones.

There are lots of Die Sendung mit der Maus on youtube. It's aimed at slightly older kids but our toddlers love it as there's loads about tractors and trucks and balloons and bubblegum and that sort of thing. It's a cartoon intro with a mouse and an elephant, followed by a short info video about topics such as mentioned above. There is also an app.

I'm not really sure if this link is useful in the US, there might be restrictions. http://www.srf.ch . This is Swiss national TV in German and you might find something. You Tube is full of such things. Search for tagwords "Kinder wissen", you'll find something. I think it is really wise of you to prepare your son languagewise. By the way: There are two new Swiss movies in theatres now, both classics of Swiss childrens literature: Heidi and Schellen-Ursli. DVD's will be sold soon. Order both, the movies are charming and in Swiss German.

My toddler and husband (who have about the same level of German) watch together Peppa Pig (a British series for preschoolers) in German ("Peppa Wutz"). But it is only available in Hochdeutsch, AFAIK.

Guetnachtgschichtli, each day a new episode.
http://www.srf.ch/play/tv/sendung/guetnachtgschichtli

At the moment "Masha und der Bär/Маша и Медведь " from Russia in Swiss German. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masha_and_the_Bear
Not much of talking, and you will see some stuff that are not very common in Switzerland, such as a samovar and Cyrillic letters.

It looks like each episode of "Masha und der Bär" is online for 5 days only.
Very first episode runs out today!

Also have a look at this Youtube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3a...zh7KK6z18a4f2g

It has such classics as:
Chasperlitheater
Globi
Papa Mool
Pumukel

Note: Phillip Maloney is more for the grown ups. Murder Mysteries solved by an Whiskey gargling private eye.

Re: German TV for preschooler

Thank you so much for all the recommendations, they are extremely appreciated and I will be looking into all of them.

I figure both Swiss German and high German will be needed, so we will do both. If kids all over the world learn English from tv, then if we only let our son watch tv in German he should pick up a lot. Or at least it will make it easier on him when he arrives.

I hadn't considered der Maus due to his age, but that is a good tip about toddlers liking it. I'm sure my husband wouldn't mind watching it too.

I will be looking into the movies, websites, YouTube channels, everything. Truly thank you.

Except Pingu, they don't talk in that show, haha! Just my luck, the most famous swiss toddler show has no talking. Ha!
