Hi all,
i had a look on the forum trying to search the IT salary for that position, but i found in most of the cases, ideas for salaries in other IT fields.
The company, after 3 interview, is going to make me the economical offer, and i would like to know if 90000 p.y is a reasonable salary.
I have 11 years of experience, cisco certification and strong knowledge on network, server operating system (linux and microsoft),sharepoint and asterisk based phone systems.
I found a post of early 2009, i would like to know if something in the last months has changed, due to the euro economical crisis.

Cisco certification and 90K per annum !!!! ?? sounds a little low to me.
A quick look through linkedin, there are plenty of higher paying jobs ( looking at position description gives you a good insight ).

well, to be honest i have to renew them, you have to do this every 3 years, and at the moment i'm not recertified.
Anyway, speaking about the experience i have, anyone has ideas about how much money i could ask during the negotiation phase with the company with who i'm speaking?

job is where ? Zürich, Geneva, Basel, Uri ? at end of day ( and I'm not saying anything that is not already on this forum) it depends on:
- do you really need the job?
- cost of living in city you'll be working/living
- your commitments

I would say 110K but look through forum for other peoples's inputs.

depends what your administering. Small company then 90k is fine. if its big (>1000 Servers) then its too low, look for 120ish

hä? more taxes in ch/zh than where in europe?
48% tax in germany vs 18-26% in zh, 20% vat in germany vs. 7% in ch talk a clear lingo.

90'000 gross or net? I'd say the average is closer to 100k before tax. How old are you, if I may ask? And what's your education? In Switzerland, it's usually three factors that determine your salary: age, highest level of education and experience.

And yes, if you compare things to 2009, salaries have decidedly gone down in the admin field. There still aren't many job openings in IT - and of those available, I'd say only about 1-5% are in administration. The rest is specialized consulting and software development.

not really - Cisco certification isn't that special anymore. I got Cisco certified in the army; that says it all.

tell that to the CCIE's who are earning megabucks in software houses

19% vat in Germany. 8% in Switzerland.

Plus there are many other "taxes" deducted from one's salary here which may not happen in other countries - accident insurance, govt pension deductions, unemployment insurance etc. And health insurance comes as a shock for people, such as me, who are from the UK. Although in the UK we need to add National Insurance to the overall tax take.

I'm 34 years old, i don't have university degree but specialized diploma (is not worldwide recognized, i know) and 11 years of experience in a IT research Center in Milan, as a network, servers and security specialist.
90000/100000 are reasonable?

I made a mistake... i wanted to say in the post before, that in CH you pay less (not more!!!) salary taxes than, for example, in my country (Italy)

i've received the offer from ZH, and is almost 90k CHF per year.
I was searching on the forum to understand the costs of living in Zurich, just to have an idea of how much i will save in my pockets.
I will let you know if i have any doubts.
At first sight,taxed at source (20-22%), net 5900 chf per month, thinking to 3000 for housing and living (not going out to the restaurant, i know), 250 for health, and 50 transport, i could save something like 2300-2600. Realistic?

<90k per year, 5900 Chf's per month sounds high, is it 12 or 13 month salary? have you factored AHV etc in to your calculation?

If you are 34, single and have experience in networking etc then for 90K don't leave your beautiful home country. First point is that with 90K gross you are definitely not saving 2500 a month. If you don't go out a lot then may be 1K a month max.

Just as example, Healthcare for you is going to be 400 a month (If you take a low 200 CHF premium you will pay first 2500 which is about 200/month. You can always consider that you will not fall sick but I would consider it not so wise), your home town is close to CH so will travel more to Italy. Shopping here even basic is very expensive.

For such a small saving I am not sure if this is worth leaving your own social net, family and friends. The only catch is if you don't have a job at all in Italy.

But I guess some skills like core IT and all have similar value all around (offcourse you have to consider cost of living adjustment into account). Wish you good luck.

I paid low 200s for my healthcare, same demographic, same location. With a net of 5900 (approx), which is likely, you'll pay maybe a thousand for groceries and related, 2000 for an apartment (though it can be done cheaper), call it 250 for insurance, and more like 75 for the transit system, you'll hit 2500ish left. Call it another 500 for margin of error, and that leaves you with 2k in the bank.

Whether you actually save that money, or increase your lifestyle, is up to you, but surely some of it will go to one-offs or annuals that you're not including here (a thousand a year for fitness, 200-300 for rental insurance, etc). But it's definitely do-able.

If you're moving for the money, though, I'd say look for a better offer (assuming you're worth it). It's not uncommon for college grads in IT to start with 70-80k annually.

I've seached on the internet and on this forum, and it seemed to me that 90k per year was a good salary for living in ZH.
let's say i'm not saving 2600, but 2000, i could save almost the actual salary here in italy.
Am i right? Ok, sure i will not become rich, and i'm not choosing to move only for money, but...

my 2 cents worth:

• based on the above mentioned you "might" be able to save 2K, but you need to be realistic.
• going out is VERY expensive in Zurich. Even just basic socializing, such as occasional drinks/dinner with collagues will cost you extra.
• i gather you want to travel around Switzerland, or visit home occassionally. It will cost you, although with the 1/2 Tax card you could optimise it.
• Additionally to your regular rent and health costs, you will also need to pay for utilities (heating, electricity, phone, mobile, internet, cable tv etc.)
• Extra costs, such as dentist, legal, or even just renewing your permit will cost extra.

From my experience, there are a lot of "hidden" costs in Switzerland which people normally don't calculate with. Pending on your lifestyle your savings could largely differ. You could certainly live comfortably on 5'900pm, and have a life, but don't expect luxury and certainly don't expect to save 2K from it. Of course, you could put away more, but you would need to make some sacrifices.

90K is OK, but I'd say it's a minimum to get by here.
