What's a paramedic to do? [Recognition of foreign qualifications]

Good day everyone ,

I will be moving to the Zurich area this summer and wanted to know if anyone has information about employment and the area hospital. I am a paramedic with all the certs acls, pepp, CPR, will you get the point the list goes on. Any help with this would be great.

Maybe being a bit more specific might help, are you after a job, wanting to know how to get your qualifications recognized, find out about the local hospitals etc...

Two things I can tell you: - Learning German will help A LOT!
- Generally in Switzerland there is not so much a shortage for doctors as there may be in other countries but generally health care staff we have a huge shortage. Not sure about the situation for paramedics specifically.

If you are hoping that being a paramedic will obtain you a visa, i would doubt it.

If you already have a visa, you WILL need to know german to be able to work in the field

I am sure your experience will be recognised, although there are maybe some small differences in how things are done from country to country, but sorry to say, a job like that will require a high level of german.

You cant treat people when you cant understand them

I'm afraid they are right, you have to speak the local language more or less fluently to be a paramedic. Surely, it makes sense
Read last week in a UK paper that a woman seriously ill in Casualty in a London hospital had to threaten to call 999 in order to get a nurse who didn't understand English to call the Doctor when she got worse

Re: What's a paramedic to do???

I think this bit about acceptance of 'foreign' qualifications in the paramedic field might be relevant.

Honestly, you would probably need to know Swiss German to be a paramedic, due to needing to talk to people in high stress situations (where I would probably lapse to the language i was most comfortable with)
