unemployment office

Hi All,

I live in Basel Land and I'm studying Federal accounting. I have my exam in March this year and I'm taking time off to study.

I use to work in a trust company in ticino for 10 years, and now that I'm in Basel Land I would like to apply for unemployment, so that I can survive while I'm studying and maybe take some courses to learn German.

Anybody that could Help??

Thank you all.

Cheers,
Aris

Re: unemployment office

I don't think you'd qualify for unemployment while studying for an accounting qualification. Is it a full time course? And since you are taking time off to study then you would not be considered available for work during that time. But I would assume once you finish your exams in March you would qualify. March isn't that far off so it might be best to go see the RAV now.

Re: unemployment office

Just so I get my facts straight:

You have a job.
You quit to study.
This study period is... How long? 1 month, if I read that correctly?
Then you want to go on unemployment while you search for a new job.

I imagine the RAV will look unfavoroubly on that. Most likely you will have the three month penalty - starting after your study period, as you're not actually available to work then - before you can collect any benefits. That assumes that you're eligible, of course (requirements are in other threads, but if I understood your post then you probably are).

Re: unemployment office

Hi,

thanks for the replay.

ok this is the situation..

I have been working for 10 years in Kanton Ticino, for an accounting firm. I came to Basel, because my wife (Canadian) found a job here with a multinational company.

I quit my job on November last year, so I should get only one months penalty, so should be eligeble from January.

Before I was working during the day, and take clases at night and studying on weekends.

Now, since I moved here and do not have a job, I was thinking to focus 100% on my study (exam are end of march this year), but on the other end I do not want to loose my unemployment benefit (since I worked for 10 years and paid contribution as well).

to avoid this, I was thinking to apply for unemployment and take some german courses. This will give me time to learn German and study for my exam.

of course I believe I will be required to send out CV's to companies every once in a while

Thanks,
Aris

Re: unemployment office

I think you are in for a shock my friend. 90 days punishment (if applicable) starts from when you become registered for unemployment, not from when you quit. Even if you quit 6 months ago and didn't claim yet you will still have the full 90 day punishment coming to you.

You also have to be available for work and not just sending out cv's once in a while. Signing up with the RAV is no holiday.
