Difficulty finding work in Zurich

Hello, I am new to this forum.I am Australian and we moved to Zurich 6 months ago (for my partners job). I am finding it very depressing and difficult to adjust. I have begun an intensive German course but it is probably going to take awhile to begin speaking well as it is not easy.
I am a professional Jazz singer which has been my main profession for the last 5 years however I have not had much luck finding venues to perform in Zurich. Our 7 year old daughter has recently started going to school and I have been looking for a day job as a nanny, or teaching singing...but so far no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look for any singing and/or day work that doesn't involve speaking good German? I would love to hear how others have managed to adjust into life here. Thanks

To find a babysitting job the best is to look for it here on the forum or: greataupair.com or babysitting.ch

Re: Difficulty finding work in Zurich

Hi belleb.

I am based in the Lausanne area, and I can see lots of articles about jazz etc in local publications and a general interest in Jazz in this area. The Montreux Jazz festival is a big event in this part of the country.

Why don't you do a bit of research on Montreux Jazz festival and who knows who or what you may come across. I think there are also some jazz events here in Lausanne. Hope this helps a little.

Here are just a few links which could help you:

http://www.bandweb.ch/ad_list.asp
Ads from Bands/Musicians

http://www.moods.ch/de/konzerte-part...ramm/?uid=6004
Moods has a monthly meetup with the Resident Artists and Musicians who are interested. You have to buy an "Musiker-Mond Abo" which costs CHF 200.- and gives you access to the meetings and as far as I know concerts too.

http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ssd/de/i...sikboerse.html
Official site from the city of Zürich, Ads from Bands and Musicians seeking.

Just ads.

A group of professional women in Music. Contact them.

http://www.bazillusclub.ch/index.php...ramm/index.php
Watch the Videos of what bazillus offers. Get in touch or visit the club.

Hope that helps.

Re: Difficulty finding work in Zurich

I'm afraid life as a professional musician in Switzerland is very hard to come by. I know some very talented guys who cannot get a gig, and Zurich in terms of venues (unless your a superstar) is very poor for a city of its size.

I saw a concert at the end of last year with some very well known jazz musicians and there were only 20 people in the audience, out of which I was probably the only non-member of the club.

Good luck with your search.

Re: Difficulty finding work in Zurich

Hi, I'm also Australian, sing jazz, and have a seven-year old daughter.

I've been here four years now, and after two years in Zurich now live in Meilen (15 minutes by train from Stadelhofen).

I'm more than happy to get together (and get the girls together) for a chat about music, life etc etc.

Re: Difficulty finding work in Zurich

This bar has a different jazz band playing every Thursday and Friday, may one of those bands is looking for a singer.
