English Speaking Job Chances

Hi Everyone!

I am fresh here in Switzerland although I'm a Swiss. I didn't grow up here that's why I only speak English.

I am now looking for a job, but most of them require German fluency. I only know the basics.

Do I have a chance to land a job here even if I speak fluent english only?

Thanks!

Great! I had my Bachelor in Information Technology last March in the Philippines. I was a former Radio Host in our city. I have tried applying for IT positions but it seems that they really need somebody who can speak well in german.

There are loads of IT companies in/around zurich who will not care too much that you only speak English, they will care about your skillset though and it tends that "just" a bachelor is no enough, what really counts is what you have done outside of the curriculum (in general thus open source kind of work, or other jobs you have had) which show what you are capable of. This is especially true as degrees are not comparable between unis where hey come from and it also does not tell at all if you are able to even turn on a computer as one just read through the books and filled in he exams correctly.

As such, show off on your resume what you did next to your education as that will make yo stand out.

Re: English Speaking Job Chances

Hey!

I'm in a similar situation as well- Swiss, but grew up abroad (Malaysia) and hence have English as my mother tongue. I do speak Swiss German along with a number of other non-European languages, but my High German's basic at best, and that's what seems to be holding most companies back.

I've been trying to find temporary work from now until early July, but have had zero success so far. I've got a Bachelor (Hons) in Business Economics and Finance, but my attempts to find a Graduate Training position for after the summer have yielded equally disappointing results.

It can get quite discouraging, constantly being faced with negative responses. Don't give up though! There's got to be something around the corner.

I have had the same results as you. But yes, I'm still hoping! There has to be something out there, we just need to find it!
