My question for people who works in financial sector:

How important to know German if I want to work in financial sector in German part of Switzerland?

I know that it is major benefit of knowing language of the country where you live. I like German and I am learning it as hard as I can, but it is nice to know how important it for Finance particularly. I know that master programs in Switzerland mostly in English, and I know that English is international language in Finance, so I can make conclusion that German is not so important for financial sector.

But maybe I am wrong?

So, how important to know German for work infinancial sector in Switzerland?

It depends on which company you work for and which office you are located in. 10kms can mean you go from being english to german reliant within the same city

It depends on the job you have. My friend doesnt speak german, but fluent english and french, in his role he is dealing with english speaking customers...
the other colleague is working in back-office in IT dealing with financial consolidation and german is a big plus...

I think that it is not a must... but it really depends on the role

I speak very little German (am trying to learn) but I work in a financial institution and my team communicates entirely in English. Only thing is it makes you become complacent and not as motivated to learn. If you manage to get an English speaking job, keep focussed on learning German!

When I have been job hunting I have found that most places are wanting people to speak German or French fluently and English would be a bonus. Keep learning the German and goodluck

It is very important, that you know the German Language while in German part of Switzerland.

If you want to be "successful" and well accepted in the German part of any Financial jobs, you have to speak, write and converse socially in German. Better still, Swiss-German. Even if it is a low level german skills.

i made do without DE for 6 years? Then I started (restarted) my DE lessons, and I try to speak during meetings, lunches, etc. It makes a big difference.
