Job options for computational biologist?

Hi,
I am moving to Bern soon and would like to know what are the job options for a phd in computational biology? I have 6 years of research experience(computational and experimental heart physiology) in academia (including running my own research group). Now I would like to move to an industry position. What could be possible entry point positions for me? From what I can see there are either research jobs or jobs related to clinical trials.

Thank you for any advice !

Welcome. I wonder if you could update us on your story? I think it is very interesting to see how people switch from academia to industry.

Re: Job options for computational biologist?

Thank you everyone for your welcome! The update on the story is that I have moved to Switzerland with my husband and gotten my residence permit but have not looked for jobs yet. I am still not sure what are my options in the industry. It seems to me it is either a research position or a clinical research associate type positions. Can anyone please share their experience or give me some advice? Do you think contacting one of the recruiting companies will help me in figuring this out?

Re: Job options for computational biologist?

Hi Puks,

Welcome to the forum.

I think computational biology is a great field to be in, as they seem to be in high demand.

I help run a series of online Science job boards, which include positions available here in CH as well as in the rest of the world. You may want to check them out. One is www.nobel-jobs.com. I think we also put comp biology jobs on our Computer Science board: www.turing-jobs.com.

I wish you much luck in finding a great position!

Cheers!

Well, congrats - computational biology is a big thing now in Pharma Industry. It is increasingly used as a predictive tool in pharmaceutical discovery...so, I would search jobs in Roche, Novartis and other companies.

Re: Job options for computational biologist?

Hi there,

I have a friend who started with one of the Pharma's in this field, I believe he is working with stats and modelling.

If you like, you can PM me a small message and I can forward it to him. I am sure he won't mind answering any questions...that way he can reply back to you with some info.

hope that helps. Otherwise, you should start looking at the career sites for wach company...i.e. Roche, Novartis etc...

regards
CB

Re: Job options for computational biologist?

Beiersdorf. Abbott. Bayer. Ciba.... there's a huge list of pharma companies with R&D of some sort in Switzerland... do you have professional connections from your university studies ? Ask them where graduates go...follow the paths of others...

Re: Job options for computational biologist?

Thank you very much everyone! I have started looking at the companies you all have mentioned. My next question is how strict are these companies about pharmaceutical experience? I have found some suitable job openings but they all ask for industry experience which I don't have.
