How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

I searched the forum and google and have really came up with no good answers.

Here in the U.S retail employees earn minimum wage which is around $7.50hr -$9.50hr. On average most retail employees probably make around $800- $900 monthly. This is very is obviously very low pay but its what alot of people live on in the U.S.

So again what is the average hourly pay of some one working retail (petrol station, mcdonalds, clothing store ect ect.)

3-4000/month.

There is no minimum wage.

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

It can vary, but from what I've heard the "average" is between 35-45K/year depending on the tasks you do, how long you've been there, etc.

Now before you get all excited and want to move here, remember that the cost of living is higher. Oh, and search the Forum for advice about Americans and taxes in Switzerland. Fun stuff.

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

Wow, that is an incredible figure.
I searched average rent and it seems high (over 1,000 for a single bedroom) but if you are making that much a month just at a "low paying job" rent becomes a non issue and I cant imagine some one making that in Switzerland and still be in poverty.

Does poverty even exist there?

3,000 - 4,000 a month is considered a really decent paying job here. This is what an average teacher or computer tech can expect to earn.

OP, you are comparing apples to oranges. Or perhaps apples to widgets or something even farther removed. You cannot take a Swiss wage and translate it to an American standard of living.

To give you an idea:

The poverty line is considered to be (in 2010) 2250 per month for a single person, and 4000 per month for a family of four. That data was from 3 years ago, and the cost of living has risen quite a bit since then.

http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/d...key/07/01.html

So a salary of 3000 per month is hitting poverty levels, depending on how many people that wage is supporting.

Do not underestimate how very expensive Switzerland is. Although OH makes what is for Switzerland a good salary, here we are far worse off materially than we were in the US.

Contrary to the media myth, the streets of Switzerland are not paved with gold.

(They are, however, paved - and the potholes are fixed promptly. )

---

And before you ask - no, an American will not be granted a work permit for a retail job. (Sorry - we've had too many of these sorts of naive posts lately...)

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

It depends where you live too. From what I understand, a sales assistant working at Migros where I live, earns the same as one in Geneva - and yet the cost of living here is much much lower, and you can get a 1 bedroom flat for less than 500, and a 3 room flat for about 700. You couldn't rent a garden shed in Geneva for that money.

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

Ferney is in France, and the FF (French franc) does not exist anymore - and have long been replaced by the Euro

If you are on a low salary, one of the first thing to do is give up un-necessary expenses like Coca-cola - tap water is excellent, lol. You also have to learn to swap branded and speciality produce which is expensive here, for other local products which are more common and cheaper. For instance Kellogg's Frosties etc, are still expensive, as they are not traditionally Swiss. Make porridge with oats, which are really cheap for instance, or have bread and jam. When I went to live in London on a very low salary (training as a trilingual translator/PA) - I had to quickly learn to use local products- had I wanted to buy Swiss cheese and sausages, I'd have died of starvation- as they cost a fortune in London. And use local fruit and veg in season from the markets.

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

ok so that coke price is in ff . french francs?
i seen a better example of a two liter being 2.50 that is pretty close to u.s. prices.

"The Placette de Cornavin in Geneva sells a box of Kellogg's Frosties for 4.10 CHF"

so say food cost 600 a month.. you still have money left over at the end of the month. in america there is no way you will have money left over working retail.

Add to 1200:
- mandatory health insurance ~= 200chf => 1400
- food for 1 person ~= 250chf => 1650
- phone + internet ~= 100chf => 1750
- miscellaneous (garbage bags, small hygiene items etc) ~= 50chf => 1800
- transportation ~=200chf => 2000

So yea, you're left with ~1000chf per month with the very approximate amounts above (and I'm probably forgetting some). Add to this the relocation costs (furnishing an apartment, permits and whatnot) and the fact that the above includes 0 social interaction (movies, eating out, visiting mountains) and 0 unexpected expenses (doctor visits etc) and it doesn't look so rosy after all.

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

Social interaction does not have to cost so much, if you are clever about it. And for eating out - just invite each other to your own flat for meals on a rotation basis. If you live on a low salary, you have to use your 'loaf' to make it work. Meet a few people via EF, or your language class - put a bit of effort into it, and hey presto. Depends so much on you, your personality and attitude.

But to work in retail you would have to speak at least one of the national language (at least the one relevant to the area you'd live in, be it French, German or Italian).

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

It is possible for a single to adjust the monthly budget for Food&Beverage here in Switzerland to around 350-400 sfr without any problems.
Eating out will not fit in this budget .
Internet (30 mbit) and Phone ( with unlimited calls to 30 countries) cost me around 85 sfr per month, Transportation in the main area of Zurich will cost around 80 sfr per month.
If you are lucky , you get a small flat for under 1000 sfr per month/furnished already.
Garbage bags here in zurich are pretty cheap (10 pcs will cost around 11 sfr/17L).

Honestly that is great compared to a low paying job in America. Like I said working retail at best you will earn $900 a month
Rent - $500 (this is a one bedroom in a dump)
Utilities $100
Food - $200
Phone/Internet - $100
Health Insurence - you cant afford it
Transportation - you cant afford it
Normal hygienic items - you cant afford it, so you get rid of the phone
Entertainment - you download illegal movies

Money left over - None, you are probably in the hole/ you need to get a second job .

Can you send the link you used which showed prices in French Francs? Or is this a wind-up?

Re: How much do retail employees earn hourly or weekly?

Why the question? You're not thinking of moving here too are you? If so, sorry but you won't get a job working in retail. It's Swiss and EU first and there are plenty of them here to do the job. Very specialised or outstanding skills in a field that's in demand yes, possibly, but not your common, everyday work in a shop/McDonald's/petrol station/etc job.
