What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

Hi everyone,

I imagine there will be a lot of people who will direct me to other threads, But they are quite old and I thought it would be a good idea to ask the question to get a 2013 perspective.

I've been offered a position which will offer me approximately 110k CHF in Geneva. I'm single and don't have any children, I lead quite a simple life in that I'm not really into the party scene.

My question is is this salary good enough to lead a comfortable lifestyle? I'm not talking about buying designer clothes or expensive watches. But rent a one bedroom apartment in a safe neighbourhood and still save money which is very important to me ideally around £1500? I earn around £45,000 in London and I'm happy with the life that I got but moving to Geneva might be quite an exciting prospect. But if I'm not saving any money what's the point if I want to think about long term I'd like to buy a house one day back in England.

I'm really sorry if people get angry that this questions being asked once again, But it would be great if I could get your opinion, as this Is such a big decision and it's so hard to find information on the Internet that's recent.

Thanks,
A

It's a good salary. You'll save way more than you can in London on your 45K.

You'll be fine. 2:1 ratio for your lifestyle and the current exchange rate is ok for Switzerland as a whole - bit more for GVA/ZRH.

Don't eat too much red meat, don't take taxis and you'll do ok

Moreover, consider that this region and GVA itself is quite close to France - if you want and have a little bit of extra time for shopping, you can manage a considerable part of it on the French side of the border. It'll help you to drive down your costs further.
CH is extremely expensive from a lot of aspects, but the price level in France is closer to the European standards.

Re: What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

Thank you so much for all your replies. I've been offered relocation and one the questions I was going to ask them was whether living in France would be more beneficial financially and I've heard that it's quite easy to travel into Geneva city centre.

But I'm glad that the salary that I've been offered would give me a comfortable lifestyle as there're a lot of other forums where people are getting more but been told that it is not enough in Geneva. But maybe that's because they have family moving with them also. Like I said the objective is to have a good experience, live a comfortable lifestyle (decent apartment and a social life i.e. not too crazy) and save money.

Bit of a broad question but do any of you live in France and work in Switzerland and is it something that you'd recommend?

That's a question that I think you will find answered in other threads here. I can't really help because I live and work in Switzerland and although I live very close to France, I'm on the other side of Switzerland from Geneva, and I'm told the frontalier issues differ greatly between Basel and Geneva.

The rule of thumb in Basel is that the attractiveness of living in France (from an income tax perspective) is directly proportional to the number of dependent children you have, with two being the tipping point. With no children, you'd be much better off in Basel. But that's Basel, and as I said, Geneva is apparently different. And I can vouch for that, Geneva is certainly, um, different.

Re: What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

I have a lot of colleagues commuting on a daily basis from France to CH.
I doubt they would do it if it was not a worthwhile option for them...
Probably it's not a bad combination to receive Swiss salary and pay most of your costs in France.

If I have a look at the plates of cars in the parking lots in front of the building I work (in Meyrin, next to Geneva), at least half of them are having French plates.
So I do believe it's a feasible setup, however, for some of them it takes more time to get into work and to get home in the evening than for those living in CH.

That's a great salary. Enjoy your new life....
If I were in your position I would chose to live in Switzerland. What if one day the swiss start making life harder for frontaliers? More taxes etc.
Everything's possible...

Re: What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

The cost of living is quite a bit less in France. Groceries, restaurants, rent, etc. are all cheaper than they are in Geneva. However, in my opinion, the French residential areas closest to the downtown area aren't as nice as the adjacent Swiss side.

The commute seems like it could be kind of a hassle as well, but lot's of people do it, so I guess it depends on your priorities.

My Swiss and non-Swiss colleagues keep saying than anything above 100k in Switzerland is very decent. You will be able to save quite a lot provided you do not eat and drink out too much :-)

You want to save £1500 (CHF 2171) per month on a CHF 110,000 annual salary in Geneva? Very difficult in my opinion.

Re: What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

As a single guy on that salary I don't think it would be worth it for you to live in France. The biggest advantages to living in France are for families with kids even in Geneva and I personally think you'll get more out of your experience by living in Switzerland. As others have said you can always pop over the border for shopping.
As others have said you'll be absolutely fine on that salary and should be able to save.

As an aside, that's the way to ask a 'is this salary enough to live on in Switzerland question' and get sensible answers.

Re: What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

It's true that it is mainly families that move to France but I would have a look in France nevertheless, you would save yourself probably min. 1500 EURO a month in rent. That's a lot of money you can spend on enjoying your time here. It is true that the closest French residential areas such as Ferney-Voltaire or Annemasse etc are not the nicest areas but there are beautiful areas as well. We're in Messery, which is 5km from the Swiss border in Hermance on the Haute Savoie side of the lake and very happy there. It is quite international (there is even an English bar) and it makes all the difference to be close to the lake in my opinion when you move to this area.

110K for what?
If you are flipping burgers at McDonalds then the salary is AWESOME.
If you are going to be the CEO at a bank, then it's bad.

However

110K for anything is Switzerland will see that you have a fantastic life. Given what you've said and you live within your means, you will always move forward.

In short, you won't struggle on 110K here whichever way you want to look at it, but a better question is, "Is 110K an appropriate salary for my position in the industry I work in?"

The OP's question wasn't "Is CHF 110k adequate compensation for my unspecified job?" It was "Given my clearly expressed parameters, could I fulfill my ambitions/requirements on a salary of CHF 110k?"

Good question, well expressed, and comprehensively answered.

Re: What's a good salary in Geneva (2013 Update)

I live in France because its actually closer to my workplace in Switzerland then if i was to live in Switzerland little weird i know

We do benefit by living in France but not by much. . . WHere we live is fine but the nearest place in Switzerland would be a nicer place to live.. with more amenities & things to do

Anyways, youl do fine with 110K you dont need to live in France.

Best of luck with your move

Should be possible if you live a non-extravagant lifestyle:

110,000 gross
-30% for all taxes (shouldn't be far off)
77,000 net
= 6,400 per month in your pocket

Knock off 2,500 for a modest but comfortable apartment, 300 for health insurance and that leaves 3,600 for food, travel and savings. Once you are set up in Geneva I would say that is possible.
