System Administrator salary expectation in Geneva

Hi everybody,

I've been working for the same company for 3 years as a System administrator / Remote computer technician in Romania. The company is specialized in offering IT support for other big companies (it handles everything from the help desk to the on-site technicians).

Two weeks ago I was sent to an important client in London to replace the local System administrator / computer technician while he's on his annual leave. I'm finishing my assignment here and I'm about to return back to Romania. The thing is that after some interviews with other people inside the company I've been offered a Level 2 System Administrator position in Geneva, Switzerland. They should handle the relocation process and all other transfer related details that may come with it.

The only problem is that I'm still waiting for my salary offer and the therms of this relocation. I'm fluent in English & Italian but don't speak French for now (which is not a problem because I'd have to work in an English speaking environment).

How much should I expect and what's the minimum I should accept (before taxes)? An important detail is that I'm about to get married and my soon-to-be wife will have to join me soon after I relocate. We'll have to live on my salary until she finds a job. She's an Environmental Construction Engineer but only speaks English for now, witch could be a big obstacle in finding a job.

Thank you.

This is what I should expect for this type of job or this is the minimum that would allow me and my wife to have a decent life for a while? No luxurious stuff, of course.

I hope you're right. If I'm not mistaken, the labor office should check and approve the salary that companies offer to foreign citizens in order to avoid abuse.

Thank you.

This is about right, my husband actually got an offer this week for a position at 110k (he thought it was slightly high).

If you want to live well on that salary, look on living outside of Geneva, example canton Vaud, and commute into Geneva. The housing will be much lower.

Re: System Administrator salary expectation in Geneva

Thank you for your input. They're offering about 84k gross/year + another 12k gross/year that are are some sort of housing allowance which I'll receive monthly.

Regarding the overtime, after reading many topics I have a feeling that paid overtime is not such an accepted term in Switzerland.

Re: System Administrator salary expectation in Geneva

Depends a lot on the sector you work in too i guess.
I'm a techie, unix, infrastructure, various stuffs like that but i'm in banking. I get paid all over time and various extras and the base is a lot higher too. Overtime usually applies to the grade you are on i think. I've rejected promotion for years because it would cost too much!

Maybe take it and then shop around

John_H, yes I'll take it, of course and to tell the truth, I'm not so eager to shop around yet. I've been with the company for some time and they've always been fair. Even what they're offering now seams fair based on the salarium tool suggested by Sbrinz.

Either way, time will tell it's opinion on the matter. Thanks for yours until then!

Re: System Administrator salary expectation in Geneva

I think that realistically, and if your total experience is only these 3 years with the current company, you can expect to be offered 100K.

Now, with this money, the issue I see is that you will have to get whatever housing is offered to you, or live in France. Where is the office in Geneva btw?

100K will be enough in any event to start a life in Geneva. You should receive about 5500 CHF net per month and twice the amount in December or about 6K each month without a 13th salary. When you actually manage to get a flat in Geneva, it will probably cost around 1600-1900 all together including telecom costs, electricity and heating. So this leaves about 4 thousand francs/month for your expenses.
I also guess your wife will be able to find employment within a few months.

Re: System Administrator salary expectation in Geneva

Thanks. I've already mentioned earlier that I've been offered about 84k gross/year + another 12k gross/year that are are some sort of housing allowance which I'll receive monthly + some quarterly bonuses.

There's nothing about the 13th salary on the contract and they said they cannot assist me in finding a place for rent so I should find it myself.

You said that a flat will probably cost around 1600-1900 all together including telecom costs, electricity and heating. I hope you're right because after weeks of searching on Homegate just to make an idea, the prices seem slightly higher, not to mention that 90% of the flats are unfurnished and we'll have to hit IKEA as soon as we find something.

About her finding a job, yeah, that would be the best scenario if the language barrier wouldn't be an impediment. However, we both have basic french knowledge and we're ready to improve.

This is only if you take a small studio in a not very nice part of Geneva. I would count on about 2500 for a two bedroom flat in an average neighborhood, this counts for both Geneva and Vaud.

Re: System Administrator salary expectation in Geneva

Hi Alex,

I saw your post here which you posted in 2013 and was wondering whether you can share your experience with me?

- How did your relocation go for you? Have you been able to find a moderately priced flat? If so, what areas would you recommend?

- I have read an article that Switzerland or France are now checking for people that live in France, since they do not pay any taxes there. Is this a real issue now and will there still be a possibility to rent a flat in France and not to pay too high taxes?

- I assume you are working for Dell. What are the current salary range for Inside Sales Account Managers?

Thank you for your support in advance.
