Sports Photography Work

My wife and I are relocating to Basel this July and I am in need of fulfilling my US addictions of shooting freelance sports. I working in the marketing field as my profession and will most likely be working out of our new apartment once reaching Basel. While in the states I shoot freelance for several wire services, the biggest being Cal Sport Media (my gallery link). I am not sure where to begin once getting to Basel. I know they have a few big events each year, Euro Cup, Swiss Indoor Tennis, etc but not sure how big the market is in Switzerland. I would love help with this and if I could work with an experienced Swiss photographer I would be forever indebted.

Re: Sports Photography Work

Hi there. If you like sports photography you are coming to the right place, there is always something on here, and you dont have to travel to far to get to different events.
I`m also trying to get into the photography field here in Switzerland. But from my experiance the swiss are quite keen on a propper (swiss) qualification. So at the moment I am attending a swiss photography school, and doing a correspondance photography course with a universaty in London, since my South African qualification is not valid here. I should finish both these courses in July and then start with a bang!!!
I go to alot of sports events (Freesyle championships, Zurich marathon, Iron man, Old timer rallies, World Polo championship ext.) and take photos. I have found that if you often get seen at these events, sometimes you see the same photographers, they warm up to you, and you can make a few contacts. I had a look at your photos. Very cool!!! If I find out more I will let you know.
Maybe we will meet at an event some day, who knows. Looking fw to that.

Re: Sports Photography Work

Hey there,

Cool to 'meet' some people who work in the same field. Maybe we can help eachother out.

I'm working as a freelance sports journalist. I did some work for a Dutch sportswebsite and for a skiing website. I'm living in The Netherlands, but I would like to move to Switzerland. I was wondering if I could report from Switzerland to the Dutch media. Are there enough interesting sport events that are apealing to non-Swiss? Might there be any Swiss media that I can work for?

I speak English fluently, I think I can also write webarticles in English (I've studied in the U.S. for a while). I speak German fluently (I can interview people and have conversations), but my German writing is not good enough to publish articles in German.

Can you guys help me out? Thanx a lot!

Roelien

Re: Sports Photography Work

Hey Shutterbugs...

If you want to join a reputable agency, look into one or both of the
following:
Keystone
EQ Images (I have sold a few here)

Freelance is tough here. One of my pics is in today's BLICK SPORT.
There are also French, German, Austrian and Italian agencies looking for
photographers in Switzerland. Google it.

In 2006 I was in the right place at the right time and landed a contract
with the FC Vaduz in Liechtenstein. They just moved up into the top
Swiss league... Super League. Already won their first game in Lucerne
last Sunday.

Good luck! I am always looking for partner photographers to call upon
when I am overloaded. If you are interested, send me an e-Post (no
PMs, thanks) with your experience, equipment and link to your recent
work.

Re: Sports Photography Work

Scott,

I love retouching work and would like to get into it professionally.

Can you advise me on how to get into this field? Thanks.

My current equipment line-up: Canon 400D, EFS 10-22mm, EF 24-105/f4, EF 100mm/2.8 Macro and EF 50mm/1.8. Still missing a good tele lens...

Re: Sports Photography Work

Hi
my husband and I are considering moving from N.Ireland to Basel .
I have a strong possibility of a teaching position there and we are researching possible openings in the TV Industry .
I know it is a differant Industry from Photography but I though maybe one of you would have some names or links. Tony is S.African and has over 20 years experience .
From what I have seen so far there is not much around but I am still looking!!!

Re: Sports Photography Work

Hello Kathy and welcome to the forum.

I work as a catalogue / brochure / advertising photographer in Basel. I found my current job by reading the job adverts in Foto Intern magazine.

Might be worth subscribing.

Best of luck

Re: Sports Photography Work

thanks Flashman for that info
I will have to translate it as we speak English and our other languages are a bit flaky at the moment!

Although my husband is not a photographer ,it is an Industry that he could maybe find contacts from TV Industry.
I have tried my best searching online but have failed to come up with anything.
If there are lots of sports events in Switzerland then their must be good TV coverage and so we need to just keep asking to maybe make contact with someone in that Industry who could let us know what his chances are .
He has over 27 years experience in all kinds of broadcast and also private corporate work.
I also had an idea that because Basel has alot of Pharma companies they must do Video work and so there must be private companies that do that.
Thanks for getting back to me .The chances are that we may be coming over in Jan ..I am just waiting for confirmation of a few aspects to do with Job.

Kathy

Re: Sports Photography Work

I wanted to update on my original post. Since arriving here I have been able to get credentials from my U.S. agency and the work has really been picking up. Unfortunately the $$ has not. The wire service I am working for has only moved one image for me since being here and that was Federer during an event that I wasn't even credentialed for, go figure. Anyway my schedule is getting full for May and June and that is a good thing. I really wish I could break into a local wire like Keystone of EQ but they do not return my English emails.

If any of you are out and about or shooting pro events hit me up, love to meet some other folks shooting sports here.
