Actually by classifying them as such, he was probably giving them more money. There are many non-tenure-track asst. profs that are just glorified postdocs. They are happy doing research with no other obligations, which in turn means that they will never advance up the academic ladder.

I think the difference between a postdoc and an assistant professor has to do with the amount of teaching. Postdocs usually don't teach much.

Not every assistant professor is tenure track here, either - in Bern, some of them are fixed term contracts, although there seems to be a push for more tenure track positions at the assistant level. And it's becoming more common in the US to not offer tenure track positions - lots of fixed term, "research" or "clincal" positions.

One thing that's nice - if you're hired here as an "ordinary" professor, you get a C permit for yourself and your spouse right off the bat.
