Going to Zürich to work...

I am currently a senior at New York University (21 years old) and I'm graduating one semester early in January. I've worked for the last 2 summers as an intern at UBS and am currently working part time. Its coming to the time to make decisions for work and while I am pretty much assured a job with UBS Wealth Management here I am really interested in working in Zurich. I started taking German 2 years ago and I speak it decently. No where near great, but I think thats largely due to the fact that I am new. My main goal of going to Germany/Switzerland is to become fluent (you know from like being surrounded by it constantly).

I saw some of the posts about German not always being fully required and the ability to want to learn. That I can do (since I am clearly not fluent). I can write it decently though. I was thinking about writing to the UBS internal recruiters to tell them I am interested (I would probably write the email in German though to show my abilities, but be honest about my inabilities)

Before I do that, though, the thing I am most concerned about though is just living. Getting an apartment, a bed, mobile etc. Are all the costs worth it? I'm thinking that the apartments are probably cheaper than one in NYC, but in NYC I could at least get roommates who I know and enjoy. I feel that I could probably get a lot more out of a starting job there then here, especially in helping my career here in NYC. I currently don't have a girlfriend so there are no responsibilities really to any people, which I think is one major things that would allow me to do this.

You're thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Going to Zürich to work...

"your"

there are so many expats here of various nationalities - ages - denominations and so-on that you would find no problems there. Nor should you find problems getting an apartment or a bed.

You're better off within Investment Banking if you come over with UBS. Why? If you're not in IT, there are more foreigners I believe in the IB area than elsewhere in the Swiss business side.

Best bet I'd say is get onboard with UBS WM in the US and do an internal transfer - then you get full UBS buy-in for the move, the permit, apartment, etc. Ask about that too - I believe they call it International Assignee.
