St. Gallen work - cant speak german..

before I start, yes i know this is a copy of a thread I posted in the Visa's section, forgve me, I just want to get as much help as poss...

HI, let me introduce myself first. My Name is Angus, I am 22 years old from Edinburgh, Scotland.
I have been back in Edinburgh for a few months after returning from travelling and have decided that it is not the place for me anymore. I have been seriously considering moving to Switzerland as my girlfriend is at University in St. Gallen.
My main problem with this is that I dont speak German yet, and wonder what kind of oppertunities there are for English speakers here.
I was wanting to come and take a german course for 5 or 6 months, but Im not sure of which Visa's I would require to do this. As well as studying german, I would hope to find work in a bar or restaurant, doing dishwashing or whatever it took to keep me alive. As this is not the sort of work you normally get 'invited' to switzerland for Im not sure how I would go about getting this work or even getting the appropriate visas. I have seen English speakers in Zurich working in restaurants and things, unable to speak german, and wonder how they managed to get involved, and if there is anything like this in St. Gallen.
I have a lot of experience in Photography too, and would hopefuly in the long run like to establish myself as a photographer, but I dont see much opportunities for this here either.
I really love Switzerland and my girlfriend and want more than anything to figure out a way to stay in this country...
Any tips that you can offer would be most appreciated.
Angus

Let me give you some advice. We get 4,000 messages per month, many of our readers struggle to keep up, including me. Cross posting is poor form - not just here, but on any forum. Please don't do that again.

Please take the time to read through some of the other posts on this forum, especially those concerning employment and work permits and you'll find some useful information.
