post-doc Salary in University of Geneva

For a post-doc position in University of Geneva:
Anybody has an idea of the salary for a postdoc for a someone with only 5 years experience as PhD student (research assistant) in EPFL?(I know it is 84k CHF in EPFL and a bit more in ETHZ but I don't know about other universities in Switzerland)

Hi,

I am not sure if this will be your case, but I am PhD student in a cantonal Uni (U. Bern) and the salaries are the ones from SNF. Check yourself the document:

http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocu...rierende_e.pdf

And more information in:

http://www.snf.ch/en/funding/directa...s/default.aspx

This are for full time employment. Here in Bern some post-doc are less than 100%, so I guess you should check your working rate.

Also, for PhD student, the salaries in the federal institutions are higher than here. I think +50K, while here is 47K for first year.

Hope it helps.

PS - In the same PDF there are salaries for project staff with PhD, which I guess are post-doc.

Thanks, but still I could not find the post-doc salary in non-federal institutes in the document you sent me.

Re: post-doc Salary in University of Geneva

All income at the Uni is banded, you can find PDFs in the website.

At UZH a post doc can be on band 17, 18 or 19 depending on the contract and who is paying. For example a post doc is in band 18 and earns roughly 5k less than an ober assistant. An EU researcher (band 17/18) earns less than a SNF project worker (band 18) for the same percentage due to exchange rate.

It also depends on the percentage you earn, although in theory you could earn 100%, you may earn less in percentage but make it up in teaching and that would depend again on your Prof and the type of research you will be working on.

Re: post-doc Salary in University of Geneva

Based on glassdoor.com a Postdoctoral in University of Geneva earns CHF 73,422 in average per year which is rather low for an expensive city like Geneva (12 kCHF less than a postdoc at EPFL in Lausanne which is cheaper than Geneva!!),
Disappointing, most probably I have to decline their offer.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the help!!

Do not decline. When I applied at ETH as senior assistant I asked how much would I get. I do not see the harm in asking.

By the way, the professor told me a value and he was way wrong. Without asking, I had a raise once the personnel department took over.

Thanks, but generally I feel that the salary scale are lower in Universities like Geneva or Zurich or Bern than the federal institutes like EPFL or ETHZ.

Hi, please do not interpret in a bad way what I will ask, but why is the money a concern right now? Have you been to the lab already and talked to the other postdocs about how they manage with the salary? I asked this to every interview I had.

And also, as a postdoc I am guessing you need to think long term and see what kind of opportunities that lab will bring you.

Otherwise there would be no postdocs in the US!!! I've been there and with that money you cannot save much. Hovewer, you gain a lot in contacts and some labs will open new doors in the future for your career. That is more valuable than a few more bucks in the bank.

At least for me.

I don't think one should make a PostDoc decision based on the salary. I would check which Professor and which research fits best with the desired career pathway...

Another thing, are you sure you would get payed more than 80'000 at ETH Zürich? At least in Chemistry they will not pay you such a high salary. In the research group I stayed in the 80'000 CHF were for a 100% contract, but most (if not all) PostDocs were employed 70%.

Re: post-doc Salary in University of Geneva

Thanks for the response. you are absolutely right, one should not focus too much on salary, but rather the opportunities for future.
but I can stay at EPFL with higher salary and no need to change my place, the only limitation is that one can not be employee of Federal Institutes(EPFL or ETHZ) for more than 6 years(Unless he become permanent employee), and I have been already 5 including my PhD.
Unless I would not change.
