You should also check with the social insurance office if you'd be eligible for any benefits, e.g. help with health insurance. It's means tested
The OP's salary is as high as an average family, it's not very low at all.

Yes I know,Average is 75,000 the OP said Salary under 80,000, so not going to be a hardship case to get reduced health insurance.

The salary is not low, but the OP mentioned they have children. Perhaps a single parent. If they have to pay accommodation, childcare expenses etc, it adds up.

I am fully aware of expenses people have, however 80k for a family in ZH is not on the breadline in the reel world. There are plenty of people on this forum who dream of 80k a year who also have children.

From what I know about the RAV, you have to be back in work for at least 2 years to replenish the 400 day allowance

Re: Working while at the RAV

I am currently contracting while on the RAV. In the first month of working I was not emplyed for 7 days. I thought these would be paid for by the RAV. They were not as I had hit the limit for the month by about CHF20. Annoyingly this meant that I was out of pocket as I had paid out about 200CHF in train tickets and the same again eating in the most over priced canteen ever. Seriously charged 1chf for tap water!!
