URGENT help needed - Boss giving me deadline to leave

Hi All,

I am a B permit holder, married to a swiss and have been living here for 3 years.

I have applied for a position internally and have notified my boss that I have done so. He has also stated he will support me. I could have kept it secret but it would have looked really bad as the other manager and HR would ring my current manager as a reference.

Now in my performance appraisal he has given me a deadline to leave. Deadline could be 8-12 months although the exact timeframe was not confirmed.

Apparently we had another employee in our team who took 1.5 years to look for a job with his performance and motivation dropping. The boss seems to be putting me in the same boat as him although completely different people.

I am confident that he cannot give me a deadline to leave unless of course my performance and motivation drops thus affecting the company in which I completely understand but till that happens it is unfair to pressure someone with such nonsense.

I have always maintained high levels of performance. It is the only logical step to move up into a higher position. I notified my manager that I will do so and was in my right to do so.

I need help and some of your vital input would be much appreciated.

Re: URGENT help needed - Boss giving me deadline to leave

I don't see what the problem is.

You went to your boss saying you are looking to move internally, he is supporting you. He knows that you will move on and when you do he will need to replace you. He doesn't want a situation where you aren't 100% focussed AND he isn't able to bring in a new person dragging on for a long period.

If you are good at your job he is not going to fire you. Your objective for the year is to move to another internal role - he has documented that. Like any objective, not achieving it will reflect badly on you.

I agree to an extent. But if there isnt any more open positions that meet my experience and expectations within a year then what? I am happy with the company and my motivation nor has my performance has ever reached a point where it is affecting the company.

I have applied for 1 position internally which matches my career objective. If this does not go through and there are no other current positions then what after a year I am on the street?

You went to your boss to inform him you are applying for internal positions. Your objective for the year is to move to another role. Your boss is supporting you to achieve that. Your boss sounds quite good, if the first role doesn't work out for you then they might contact people they know to see if roles are available.

No manager wants a team member who wishes to move on.

You can't have your cake and eat it.!

You can really enjoy your current job and still apply for another internal role that you think you would enjoy even more. If you don't get it, then you just go back to trying hard at, and enjoying, your previous job. Moving internally is encouraged in almost all companies that give the slightest crap about their employees.

I have never known any manager to issue a "deadline" to someone pursuing another internal career option. It is unusual, and most of all imo unprofessional.

I have seen it - often when the individual and manager are actively looking, and the individual has made it clear they see their future away from the current team.

That doesn't make it any less unusual or unprofessional.

If it was a large company and not a startup or cowboy setup I would be going to HR to ask about this as I highly doubt it is legitimate company policy.

It was an objective setting meeting. The objective is to find a new role. Failing to reach a single objective doesn't get you fired - especially if you continue to do a good job.

If the objective is failed then it will down to the manager and individual to determine how it can be achieved going forward.

We can only go on what the OP says... you are not the OP and you do not know his manager, so until the OP really clarifies things then "deadline to leave" does sound like an ultimatum, not a performance objective.
