Recruitment agencies/headhunters

Does anyone have any advice or experience with recruitment agents/headhunters in Zurich? Is it practice to just register online with them or is it better to go to their offices and hand them a copy of your resume and references?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Hello

Depends on your field but try Linkedin. You can find many recruitment agencies/agents/headhunters. Probably easier to contact them through Linkedin by making connection. Then they can see your experience and qualification directly.

Depends on what kind of job you're looking for. Some are just databases, and their operations are simply to fill up their databanks. Others have reputations to keep with relationships they nurture. Quantity vs. Quality dichotomy.

I would suggest registering first via their website and following up with a call to arrange an appointment rather than turning up unannounced. That way you can be sure you will be able to speak with someone who specialises in your field.

Yes, but at least in Switzerland do you not just show up at a recruiting agency unannounced and expect to meet somebody else than the assistant at the front desk... Headhunter are nothing else than sales people - they want to close deals and you are their product to sell. Like any other business person is their time their money, so they only meet you if you are matching their customers or at least interesting enough to fill up the database... if a headhunter would meet you without any screening and setting up an appointment would that be a red flag for me. He cannot be worth the time meeting...

I've worked with many many many many recruiters and agencies in the advancement of my career - a few tips for CH:

Screen recruiters as they would screen you. Ask them if they have placed anyone in the company they are recruiting for, ask if they are in direct contact with the hiring manager, ask if they an exclusive contract to fill the job.

For the latter point, many don't have a contract and they are looking to gain one by use of your dossier as a door opener (if you are a well qualified candidate). You should be able to find one that has a direct relationship or at minimal a contact to the hiring manager (not just HR).

Many recruiters, especially in Switzerland and those in the UK who place in CH, don't go beyond the job title on your CV for placement. Therefore many will be completely and utterly useless if you're looking at a job that's slightly different from your background - i.e. in the case you're looking to do a lateral move or switch to a different Subject Matter, but you're carrying some experiences within your target opportunities.

There a some jewels who will be able to really dig deep into your dossier, try to learn about your, and proactively chase you, and present you in a way that gets you an interview. These are far and few in between. There are others who are just a waste of time (majority).

The goal of the recruiter is to get you an interview - that 's it after that..its all on you, just for the record.

If you do go for a recruiter, make your choice carefully. Per Swiss law, your dossier is "owned" by the recruiter for about a year. So if you are introduced to company ABC Pharma by them (see things didn't work out) and you see another opportunity say a year later, which you decide to apply independently, that can cause complications. ABC Pharma may have to pay the hiring fee to your recruiter irrespective - etc. etc.
So be aware. Same goes for the opposite, if you apply to a company for one role then use a recruiter for another role in the same company, you can get yourself into complications. In that case, the company "owns" your dossier, the recruiter will get nothing and you put both in an awkward predicament.

So, in CH, not all recruiters and headhunters are the same, some are what's called RPOs or Procurement Organizations, some are part of larger "Executive Agencies" that have specialty departments, and others are independent, I tend to like the smaller, niched independents. Though I've had larger firms place me.

In general, expect frustration, its part of the job hunting process but one you do fine one who is willing to bat for you and whom you trust, it then becomes a manageable process.

And as others had noted, F2F meetings are the best, especially when you're aligning with a direct opportunity - a good recruiter should be able to give you intel about the hiring manager, team, company etc. and help you prepare as best as possible.

The above advice is exactly what my wife would say who works in this industry for 20 years. The whole dynamic of the recruiting industry is changing to a lot more direct recruitment from companies rather than agencies, god help you if one of the "spam" agencies gets hold of your resume, you may be ruled out of any chance simply because a "spam" agency has submitted your resume (without informing you) and the company does not want to deal with this agency. Make it absolutely clear to your recruiter that your resume is not to be sent out without contacting you first. If a company has advertised a position and your resume is sent in the company is obliged to deal with that agency so you may get knocked out of the running but may be got the job if you submitted your resume directly, you should also be honest with your recruiter if you want them to work for you in these situations.

It depends on the area of your expertise. I'd suggest sending your CV (do a "spontaneous" application) to Darwin Recruitment, Swisslinx and Stamford Consultants (they will call you back after receiving your application). I worked with them in the past and they were the most effective (I work in IT but they specialize in finance and other fields as well).

To your point, a lot of companies are doing self-recruiting using the head-hunter approach. They are using so called "Talent Scouts" to serve this goal. The reason relates to decreasing cost of FTE acquisition by bringing this activity internal. The company I work for has moved recruitment internally and don't use recruiters/head-hunters - they build their own network and "talent" database. Although, the talent scouts, serving the company can be part of an RPO or can be internal - irrespective, your dossier will still be 'in the domain' of the company if you submit the dossier.

On poster noted Stamford, they are pretty good and have relationships, know the landscape well - pretty good at following up - in the case of if you're a well-qualified candidate. Positive experiences.

I'm wary of those Robot companies and their database, if they truly have some "right" to your data and your candidacy. Something does not sound legally legitimate in those arrangements. I can't anyone signing away their right of employment by such a technicality.

With that, what are your thoughts on Monster.com, and how some companies are taking those processes in house? Doesn't the hirer and candidate lose a certain degree of discretion?

The best headhunters I know tend to build long term relationships on both sides. They are interested in end results where both parties are satisfied. I've known them to call back after two years to see if you would like to be placed in a new job.

Perhaps someone can give the legal background - but there is no signing of anything - I think its part of accepting terms and conditions of your submission. What you must do, if you don't get the position, is to proactively go the company website - and request your data be deleted (there should be a function). I'm thinking it has to do with data-privacy laws etc.

Regarding Monster or any other job portal - it is part of the mix that HR recruitment and recruiters still use for Talent Search and Acquisition. However, LinkedIn remains a powerful tool they leverage - there are "recruiter" accounts that allow them to do deep searches, network mapping etc. etc. Let say it would be self-defeating not to have a LinkedIn account - its a way of "pre-validating" you.

Just for the record, I'm not a recruitment specialist, just had a lot of experience search and acquiring jobs in CH for my career advancement/management.

Thanks guys, you have been a great help! One more question, i have tried to redraft my CV to swiss standards, but would you recommend that I have a professional CV drafter have a look at my CV? For example i read on one of the englishforum newsletters about CV NOW - have you guys had any experience with them?

Nope. Don't even know what Swiss standards are. I just use common sense and American way of CV writing - show accomplishments and successes and wins. Avoid the frivolous.

A couple of things I've found effective for Swiss CVs: A Lebenslauf (short bio), a photograph, professionally typeset and layer out (InDesign), good local Swiss referrals, good Zwischenzeugnis and a nice folder. These tend to be returned to you, so you can reuse them, so an investment in good material is worth it.
