Leaving job as teacher: do I need a certificat or letter of recommendation?

This is a question for those who working in education, especially those working at a private or international school:

I am leaving my job as primary teacher of an international school. Should I ask for either a certificat de travail or letter of recommendation? I've had letters of recommendation written by school principals in other countries in the past and have never been asked to show them. Actually, I've had two jobs here in Switzerland and have never been asked to show a certificat de travail either.

If so, should I ask this of my Executive Director or the School Principal? (The School Principal is the one who knows the quality of my work.) I'm assuming that the School Principal would make a better reference than the director in this case...

in my experience the work certificate comes from the director-so i would also ask for a letter of reference from your principal

Thanks Amaraya! Have you ever had to show one or the other when you've applied for jobs? As a teacher (here or back home), have you ever actually had to show a letter of recommendation or simply tell your principal that you'd like to use him/her as a reference?

Yes, those are checked here (state schools or quite a lot of employers actually), usually a standard part of the job application folder. Ask your principal.

I would definitely suggest getting a reference from your Principal.

I have some involvement in recruitment of teachers and we definitely check references.

Yes- i've always been asked for my work certificate and i always offer up my reference letters. If you go to the u.s it is a must but here too.

Re: Leaving job as teacher: do I need a certificat or letter of recommendation?

If you are in a favourable position (meaning they are sorry to see you go but life moves on) I would definitely ask for a letter of trcommendation from the Head, perhaps another teacher in your subject or the Head of Dept. Keep a current "portfolio" with your cv - perhaps including examples of the type assignments and teaching resources you find effective. Even if you don't need it, having this at-the-ready will save chasing up things when you are hopefully going for interviews.

Years on from my earlier teaching jobs (first one 30 yrs ago) it is always the sticky point when applying for new positions. Many of the Heads and other staff I have worked with are now retired 30 years later, or moved on to "other places" IYKWIM.
