Hi there

I have just been "let go" by my company but have been payed a settlement payment. I need to register with the unemployment bureau but nobody seems to be able to tell me what the rules are? I will be claiming in Canton Bern - can anybody help? Thanks in advance..

Re: Unemployment benefit

As soon as possible: go to your nearest RAV office, ask them & they will tell you which RAV office is yours, it isn't always clear which one is applicable. Then go there and register, take your permit with you, your work contract, your letter of dismissal, pay statements, complete the forms and wait for the letter inviting you to an interview.

Immediately start applying for 10 jobs each month. You should keep proof of applying for jobs, noting the date & times of telephone calls etc, keep copies of e-mails, copies of letters etc. together with a copy of the job adverts. Your advisor will scrutinise this evidence that you are actively seeking a job. You should even apply for jobs not directly suitable for you, so an engineer can apply for a technician job, and vice-versa. Apply for jobs anywhere in Switzerland.

There are many laws covering the unemployment period, and your RAV advisor will be implementing them as he sees fit. Think of him/her as your new employer, and do exactly what he/she wants. Then you will get along fine. I was unemployed for 3 years in 4 Cantons: I did as they asked and I never had any problems.

Re: Unemployment benefit

You don't have to restrict your job search to Switzerland for you 10 jobs or even any of the 10 jobs.
The law requires you to apply for ANY job outside your field if you can't find 10 suitable jobs, applying for a job for which you do not fit the criteria is also OK when making up the 10 applications.
