Here we go again. Do you speak any of the national languages, do you have a job offer? if not then the chance is very slim to none. >Google will help with the points of permits etc.

Re: to work as ophthalmologist

There is definitely a shortage in Switzerland, certainly in some more rural parts. I've tried to make an appointment for routine testing at our local one and can't get an appointment till August. A huge shortage of GPs too (General Practitioners/physicians/family doctors).

But, as PapaGoose says, you'd need to get your qualifications and experience recognised in Switzerland- but most importantly you absolutely must have a good command of at least one of the national languages (C1 level). It is, as you can imagine, impossible to work as a doctor, a nurse or a psychlogist, unless you can communicate well with your patients, and them with you.

As there is a shortage, in both GP and ophtalmology, local authorities may give you help and support- if conditions are right. Here in my area, the local authorities are working very hard at attracting new doctors to replace all the baby-boomers due to retire all at once- for the right candidate, they will bend over backwards- but good command of French (here in our area) is essential. Some local authorities may even consider paying for an intensive language course, if they are truly interested in a high calibre candidate.

Easy, no problem, get yourself speaking a national language (German/French/Italian/Romansche) up to a high level, get you qualifications accepted by the Swiss authorities, find some way of getting yourself a work permit for non EU person, and it's all done, apart from finding a job.

A non-EU person can't get a work-permit without having found a job.

Not entirely true. If you are incredibly rich, you will get a permitů. or if you marry a Swiss/EU citizen and move here with them.

This is probably a minor detail at the present time.......but you are very correct, a non EU needs a job first.

Re: to work as ophthalmologist

You should consider getting your qualification validated by SERI in Bern. This is the agency responsible for validating whether qualifications from outside Switzerland qualify. The other restrictions would of course apply. But without this qualification, you would have no chance of coming in, based on your original qualification.

An option to consider would be to check if a minor upgrade is required from a local institution to make your original qualification permissible. This is similar to coming to Switzerland with a driver's license and then doing a local test to get local certification. This would not only ensure that you get locally certified but also gives you the time and opportunity to find work opportunities here.

As one who has been suffering from Optic Neuritis for nearly 6 months now without effective treatment because no-one can identify the cause, please think about coming to this area! We are desperately short of opthalmologists and you would probably be welcomed with open arms IF you managed to obtain a legal work permit for the EU arena.
This area incorporates : Evian-les-Bains, Thonon-les-Bains, Douvaine, Annemasse etc. and is situated on the southern shore of Lake Geneva with many of the advantages of Switzerland but not necessarily the high cost of living [especially housing, accommodation in general, and food]. If you would like more information feel free to privately email us under the details on the left hand side. Good luck

Re: to work as ophthalmologist

I realise comparisons are often odious but this is an unfortunate fact of the differences between Swiss prices and French prices [although granted, you are absolutely correct that the salaries hereabouts are probably noticeably lower] :

in our local supermarket recently, special offer of aubergines [eggplant] 0.99 Euro cents per kilo.

same week in Migros [Swiss supermarket chain for those who do not know], aubergines 4.99 per kilo.

I am not for one moment saying that this is across the board, nor that this is a weekly event, but it does tend to be the norm, so that the OP realises, especially when she asks how expensive is it in Switzerland
