Former american Banker...prospects in Suisse

So I have recently moved to Valais with my husband, who is Swiss. I speak very little French. We are both looking for jobs, with no luck. Unfortunetly, he has been looking for a while (6 months) and still nothing.

I have gotten a call from a recruiting agency telling me I have an "interesting resume". But, as you may know, they call and nothing after that.... thus, i feel so hopeless. I am 25, college graduate, worked 5 years with a large US bank as a banker and speak English and Arabic fleuntly.

Yes, I know I need French, but I am sure there is a job outthere where they can use my skills. I am just trying to hear some inspiration, motivation, someone letting me know that it is not hopefull..becuase right now it feels as if it is.

ps. The only job I managed to land is a 3 hrs per week teaching english...

Thank you in advance.

Any reason for locating to the Valais if you both have no jobs? Valais is not at all the banking mecca of switzerland. If you are serious about banking jobs, best to move to one of the financial centers of CH, where there are a lot of bank jobs and language skills a bit less critical. Perhaps focus your job search in Geneva at big banks, especially ones that need your language skills, i.e. arabic.

What runningdeer said:
Some of the Geneva-based banks might run an Arab desk. Banks focusing on wealth management and Family Offices may also appreciate your language skills.

Re: Former american Banker...prospects in Suisse

The problem with trying to find a bank job is your nationality. Banks here are leery of hiring Americans due to the US's FATCA law and also the FBAR account reporting requirements. Btw, if you don't know about these then check here:

http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Inter...-Aliens-Abroad

regarding your continuing US tax obligations. And keep all accounts you may hold separate from your husband's, otherwise his will have to be reported under FBAR too.

Have you looked at the UN's wesbite to see if there's anything there that would suit? And what degree do you have from college? Is it just a Bachelor's or is it a Masters? Most employers here like to see a Masters on your CV.

I have a bachelors in political science, I am actually waiting for Uni of Geneva and Uni of Bern for a reply since I have applied for masters programs.

Thank you for the information, my husband is pretty wary of US tax system so we will avoid a joint!

We are living with his mother in Valais since we do not have any permanent jobs or income, sadly, so that is why we are in Valais.

I am not specialist in the area but with a banking experience and speaking fluently arabic you should easily find a job in private wealth management in Geneva or Zuerich. Desks that deal with Arabic clients are growing and finding someone who speaks the language is very difficult.

Widen your search to all around the country. Zurich and Geneva are high potentials.. You can relocate anywhere when you are accepted.

Speaking of experience, I moved to Switzerland for about 9 months ago, I work from home, but I am not on monthly income and having very hard time about it. I still look for a job, but nothing.. I studied in two different fields, Medicine and Business & Economics. fields like HR coordinator International & Social Media Marketing and I used to work as a procurement analyst for a very well known Telecom Operator. The possible issue is I am not fluent in German ( I do understand German) or French.

Good luck with your search, and please do not limit the ares of your search ! Good luck to me too.. ! I hope things work out quickly.

I am mostly looking i Geneva, Zurich..really anywhere away from the mountains..its a crazy change for me to live here coming from Los Angeles..

But my husband is having the same issue with similar fields of work, Marketing, communications, HR..He speaks French, German, Spanish and some Italian. So not sure if it is actually a language issue, or these jobs are already difficult to get!

How about something like this? http://www.arabbank.ch/index.html
I am sure there are a lot more around. Geneva is the place to be and, as other posters have said, a private bank or wealth management ops may use your language skills and experience.

What about Islamic finance consulting? I did a google search and got 3 job postings in Zurich for this type of job. You'd want to look at specialized consulting firms as well as the Advisory/Consulting practices of Big 4 for this.
