The Basel Pharma job market

Most of the new jobs I am seeing are all in Zug or Zurich with a smattering in Bern. Our once reliable behemoths for growth and employment (Roche and Novartis) both seem to be laying off, outsourcing or filling their vacancies with internal candidates. Having good friends and former colleagues in both places, the messages I am getting is that moral at both seems to be pretty low depending on who you talk to.

I am starting to think that Pharma in Basel is dying a death

Re: The Basel Pharma job market

Perhaps it has just caught a cold?

In Zurich, financial sector rates for externs have been impacted by the increased number of competent graduates in europe, plus outsourcing, since the mid 90s, with rates for good programmers now about where they were in '95, in numerical terms, in real terms a lot less of course.

I guess in Pharma if you put your expectations down by 10 to 20% and still see positions, then welcome to the modern world. Taxation could be making an impact. As a finance/IT person I have been trying to switch to Pharma over the last few years, seeing it as more resiliant, or at least a second string. It is getting easier, I am getting more interest, from Zug, Cham, based on the fact that I am now going for cheap. Still no work in that sector, but a few close ones.

Re: The Basel Pharma job market

eh ?

Novartis.. 236 swiss vacancies (mostly Basel some Rotkreuz)
Roche .. 339 swiss vacancies (mostly Basel some Rotkreuz)
Actelion .. no count on the search.. but looks like well over 100

so... at least 600 jobs up for grabs in Basel in just those 3.. not counting CROs and a few smaller bios... not exactly 'gloom and doom'

as for 'morale'... I've worked in 2 out of 3 of the above.. it's absolutely no different from any other company I've ever work in

Perhaps I should have been more specific. I am mainly talking about management and above positions in Clinical, Safety and Regulatory. Manufacturing, IT, commercial, Marketing etc.. may be different, but certainly in my function I am seeing very little in Basel.

I like to browse cafepharma but take everything on there with a pinch of salt, most of the posters seem to be US-based sales reps and of course they're posting anonymously. I can't imagine how tough it must be to do that job day-in, day-out with doors constantly being slammed in your face, but its a very different perspective compared to say a Medical Writer or Safety Scientist.

I've seen a few at that sort of level on the internal ads here, some of which are certainly also advertised externally. In fact, I don't think there's any separation of internal/external vacancies now.

But popular at the moment is the idea of internal rotations. allowing folks to spend some months working in a completely different field to gain and share experience, so there's perhaps a more mobile talent pool internally. Just started an 8 month rotation in ClinOps myself, as it happens.

Re: The Basel Pharma job market

TBH, your first port described the current situation very well. I keep hearing the same from different sources, some are really frustrated with how slow the process is moving for contract jobs, across different functions (People with 20+ years of NVS experience). Maybe the NBS Re-org is affecting Novartis in more ways than planned or expected. Plus, Joe Jimenez seems to be eyeing more cost cuts.
