Job prospects opinion

I wanted to get an opinion from you fine people about the situation I am in.

I'm a non-eu citizen that has studied in Switzerland for the past two years and wanted to find work here but don't know if I should keep trying. I don't mind going back to where i'm from, United States, but I truly love it here. I have my Masters and about five years of experience but it seems like most people here that get a work visa sponsored have upwards of ten years of experience. I'm trying to get into the health sector, pharma or medical devices, and have applied at the big companies in Basel, Zurich, Zug, Geneva, etc. to a great deal.

It's kind of hard to gauge my competition because I don't know how many apply to my same job but I can assume it's quite deep given i'm going against the rest of Europe.

What do you guys think?

Re: Job prospects opinion

Do you have something to offer which might be different from EU and CH applicants?

Re: Job prospects opinion

Unless you're a recent graduate, yes you are at the back of the jobs queue behind Swiss/EU nationals and anyone else who lives here who has a valid permit. The criteria is outlined here:

https://www.bfm.admin.ch/bfm/en/home...zulassung.html

If you've recently graduated then you have 6 additional months to find a job here and you're supposed to be on an equal footing with everyone else. However, the activity must be of economic or scientific importance to Switzerland to get approval.

"Those who are successful in securing employment will be issued a work permit, provided the prospective position involves an activity of particular scientific or economic importance."

https://www.bfm.admin.ch/bfm/en/home...abgaenger.html

Frankly, unless your experience is way different from any other research intern then I can't see you meeting the economic/scientific qualification.

Re: Job prospects opinion

As far as offering something that EU and CH applicants can't, I don't know honestly. I have great people, writing, and marketing skills but it's kinda hard to quantify that. I'm trying to highlight my specialties in the health startup and medical device field as that is what my research has focused on. I know how to use statistical software (e.g. Stata) pretty well and can analyze data to make sound decisions.

My latest degree is a Masters in Health Sciences with a focus in Health Economics. I finished writing my masters thesis on venture capital funding in medical device startups and what type of signals affect this funding. My Bachelors is in Communications and I have a speech minor. My professional experience includes working for a public relations & marketing company that specialized in the luxury travel sector. Mainly helping companies such as the Four Seasons make profitable decisions in online marketing to boost business. Before that I was the Publicity & Marketing Director for a large film festival back in the states for two years.

Thanks for the replies thus far!

You could be an interesting prospect for Swiss companies looking to grow business in North America.

What positions have you applied for?

I can mainly speak for big pharma: finding HE experts is a massive challenge for (big) pharma, so that puts you in a good position. However, your background might not quite be strong enough to break into this area just yet as your undergrad is entirely different, as is your experience. If that's a field you're interested in, you're better off in a country organization, but the two big Pharma HQs in Basel will probably not happen (look into their country affiliates though).

If you're interested in VC, small biotech or medtech is the way to go. There are some in Switzerland, though you need to be aware that the market is less dynamic than the one in the US. Or try healthcare consulting, if you're open to that (and willing to put in the hours for 4-5 years) - that often proves to be a good stepping stone into industry later.

Re: Job prospects opinion

Thanks Samaire13! Mainly I have been applying to market access/analysts/statistician positions. I haven't looked into VC companies as much but i'm exploring that market. I've looked a bit into consulting but haven't really found much.

I was hoping recruiters in this sector would be more helpful but none of them I have talked to in the U.S. have given me anything. The recruiters for Europe basically said it's going to be very difficult finding a position. None the less, i'll keep at it.

Re: Job prospects opinion

are you willing to look elsewhere in Europe? the permit situation is far more friendly in other jurisdictions, particularly if you have a Masters and professional work experience.
