Looking for a job in Bern

Hi all,

I am a dutch girl who want to relocate to Bern. I have my degree in International Business and Languages. Due to a lack of practice my German is not good anymore. I am starting a course next week. I worked several years in Unilever (The Netherlands).

Finding a job in Bern for English speaking people is very difficult. Any advice is welcome!!!

Best regards,
Mirela

Re: Looking for a job in Bern

There is full employment here, and until you can prove that you can speak German to a good level, you will no get an interview here.

Jobs in Bern with only English spoken, are as rare as hen's teeth.

Re: Looking for a job in Bern

Another question..... After improving my German I was planning to go to Bern for two months to go jobhunting. Is it easier to find a job when you are already there??

That's not strictly true; in my company there are quite a few people who have little or no German, especially in R&D and Commercial Development, for example.

Yes but if you only speak English you better be at the top of your game (career wise) as you will be competing with tons of other applicants who are in the same boat..... . Maybe extend your search to Fribourg as there is less English competition (still a ton) then Bern.

Re: Looking for a job in Bern

She writes she is qualified in languages and business studies, but if she were a scientist there might be a chance of an English speaking job.

I believe she should be looking for jobs in the UK, not here.

Re: Looking for a job in Bern

Hello Mimi

maybe you can reverse the problem by making some research. When you know, which skills you have and in which direction you want to improve, you can design your job-application target-oriented and be convincing.
The problem for a hiring company, is not always and only to get people fitting in a profile, but to find someone, who is highly motivated, not by money, but on his own.

Wish you luck.

I know UniBern and Universal Postal Union are taking people only with EN only. Have a look: https://erecruit.upu.int/public/index.asp?lng=en

Good luck!

Unless I'm misunderstanding something all those jobs ask for French as well.

"Knowledge of French would be an advantage."

Re: Looking for a job in Bern

I can second that English only jobs in Bern seem indeed near impossible to find. I work full time in Zürich in a position that requires knowledge of German but where 90% of my job is in English. I never conducted my job search location specific but searched for mainly English speaking jobs within a 60 min radius with direct train connection. Bern never came up.

The question is do you absolutely have to live in Bern? What are your main skills? Basel and Zürich will be your best bet, and commuting is definitely manageable if for some reason you must live in Bern, although it is not an attractive choice. Many people do it.
