IT Manager / Finance Sector / Zurich - salary expectations

Hi all,

I am moving through the interview process for a job based in Zurich (summary is below). I have been reading similar posts, looking at salary surveys and playing with the Salarium calculator. I tend to get a number of around 180k to 220k with 200k being the average but I wanted to check with you guys what you think this might pay?

Summary role is:
- Financial Services / Insurance sector. Large international company, job based in Zurich
- IT Manager; team of 10-12 direct reports, including a team leader & Project Mgr reporting to me. I would be reporting to VP / Director level. So mid to high level management I suppose
- I have a Degree plus 15+ years of experience

What would you guys think is the likely range I should be going for?

Thanks for the help - K.

I did a little more searching and hard to find this type or job, so any suggestions / ideas would be great. Thanks, K

Not directly my field (financial/insurance), as I'm working in the telecommunication. So I would expect the salary based on the same prerequisites mentioned above a bit higher.
With this level, 160k would fit in my field, so it could be 170-180k in yours.

I'll choose the 180k in the poll, as this is the number i would recommend to claim, even if they will negotiate a bit less..

First, the poll is useless. There's a lot of people here who apparently feel that anything over 120K is more than enough, and there's nothing to allow only those who actually have some knowledge to vote.

Second, the question is useless too. Salary levels in CH are, more often than not, closely guarded secrets, and it's not unknown for colleagues with similar experience etc to be earning vastly different levels from each other. Usually without realising it, which is both an outcome and a reason for said secrecy.

Basically it's a discussion between employee and employer, and anything that can be brought to bear can and should be used. If you feel confident that they really want _you_ and no-one else, then sure, shoot high and let them haggle you down. In no case should you start low, though, as you'll either be rejected as too unambitious or you'll have doomed yourself to staying on lower salaries than your colleagues for as long as you stay there.

FWIW I'd expect someone at that level to be on >180k, but equally wouldn't be surprised to find the full range 140-220k represented. The Salarium calculator is much more likely to be accurate than anything you'll find here.

Reporting to a VP, then you are AVP? .. I highly doubt 180-200k before any other benefits.

With allowances, on-call, overtime .. Then maybe.

I voted 140k because someone that opens a poll for a salary is definitely not in a high range.

I was considering 220+ because money and title tend to have an inverse relationship to clue.

Re: IT Manager / Finance Sector / Zurich - salary expectations

Based on where I work and what you've described it would be above the 150k mark for sure. How much higher would depend on the complexity of the projects you are likely to be managing and how critical they are to the organisation.

Unlike other countries, it's rare here for companies to quote salary ranges - they expect you to go in to the interview with an expectation ready. Annoying but that's the way they do it.

My advice is to shoot high - as once you're in the job it's very difficult to get increases.

Cheers,
Nick
