Job as a volunteer for an Ngo base in Zurich

Hi everyone,

I know it might not a right place to post and to ask but I would like to see if there is anyone here might be able to help and give me an advice. As I am coming from America and currently living in Zurich for temporary but also considering about moving here for my boyfriend. I am trying to look for something I can do during my stay here and being interested particularly in Non Profit activities. I know my limit is I am not European citizen hence my opportunity to work here is like zero. I would want to see however if anyone here had already a same experience like mine and would not mind to share.
I have my previous experience working as an program officer for a local Ngo in Asia who is specific in protecting and preserving nature and the wildlife then I also have experience to work for Save The Children in America as a funds raiser.
Here I only wish to find something like a volunteer job even I know it is very difficult, I just could not help trying to maybe find a small chance.
Thank you a lot!

Unless you have substantial money to support yourself, you won't get a residency permit...who is going to support you?

As swisspea says, unless you have either a "paying" job or are independently wealthy you won't get a residence permit. Volunteering won't do the trick I'm afraid.

The only other way would be if your boyfriend is willing to apply for a concubine permit for you, but he would have to agree to financially support you for 5 years and I don't know if that permit would allow you to work anyway. You would also need to go back to the States to apply and wait for a Type D visa to be issued to you to allow you to enter Switzerland long term legally.

And I sincerely hope you've done 3 months as a tourist here and then left for 3 months before coming back otherwise you've overstayed by a wide margin and could be in serious trouble!

That, and speaking German is almost a must, if I'm not mistaken.

Thank you everyone a lot for your replies and your advices. I have never heard about that visa type but I am sure my bf has already looked all the possibilities for my stay here permanently. I was also here in the winter and we are being so far very careful with the three months regulation that is why I just recently re-entered Switzerland. I also went to the German class last time to learn some German, I will do the same this time but I really hope to find something to do in the mean time so that I could have more motivation to stay here. I know its extremely different and difficult here to work even as a volunteer. I just want to see if anyone has other way around to do it such as you can work for friends, people you know to help with some simple non payee tasks. I also have experience in fashion retail, stylist assistant...that if non profit is a so much difficult as an option, I would willingly work for free just to get myself busy and experience.
Thank you once again for your all kind reply and guidance.

No. You're here as a tourist, not a resident and therefore cannot work even in non-payng jobs.

Get your boyfriend to double check on the concubine permit, not all Swiss know this is possible - sometimes not even the gemeinde admin office.

Here is a link to Vaud canton's requirements, Zurich should be similar.

and here are some EF threads on the subject.

Bear in mind that the authorities will be looking for a long term, committed relationship that has been going on for several years so if you've just got together it's unlikely you'd be granted a concubine permit. Also expect to have to answer very personal questions about your relationship.

Thank you so much! I will ask my bf to double check on this must be useful info that you just sent here. I am not sure if he knew but so far he has been trying to look here and there for the possibility.
We have known each other for 6 years and have a strong foundation so there should be no problem about our personal relationship hopefully.
Many thanks again for your quick reply and guidance.
