Job offer rescinded - Help

I recently received a written job offer via email from a department at the UN in Geneva for a short term job opportunity. The offer asked me to provide my preferred start date.

I accepted the position and said I would start August 3rd (they did not ask for a specific start date), I had worked out when I could quit my current job in Canada and move to Geneva and thought August 3rd was appropriate.

Now they have rescinded the job offer stating that they would like someone to start July 1st (next week). Does anyone know the laws in Switzerland about rescinding written job offers?

I had already told my current employers.

I'm not totally sure if UN is under Swiss legislation, but which start date you had on your offer?

It's legal for both parts to cancel the work contract during the probationary period with 7 days notice. In theory you could make them take your work for those 7 days, but not sure that will be of any value for you.

The offer stated that the start date was my preference. In other words it had no start date.

Re: Job offer rescinded - Help

I hope you are able to stay on at your current job without repercussions.

While they might be able to withdraw the offer legally, I wouldn't want to have anything to do with a company that treats potential employees in such a cavalier way.

Cheers,
Nick

Had you received, signed, sent back and then received a countersigned contract?

I'm not sure you can easily opt out of UN.

They probably have hundreds of applicants clamouring for a job there, and know they can just toss people aside on a whim. Not fair, but not surprising.

Normally one gets a signed offer to countersign and send back. A signed job offer in my opinion is legally binding, but given notice period etc. it will not be worth fighting for.
